Summary:

Micromax Canvas Turbo is a great device at the price of around Rs. 17,999 considering the performance in day to day usage, display and build quality but on the other hand it does lack in giving some freedom like no memory expansion and non removable battery. In all it’s a good performer if you forgot the heavy gaming on this device, if gaming is something that matters for you the most then this may not be the best device for you but apart from that everything is great on this device at this price point.

Micromax Canvas Turbo is the latest flagship phone which seems to be the best as per the hardware Micromax can offer at this price point. It is powered with 1.5 Ghz Quad core processor and 2 Gb of RAM and a sharp Full HD display which is really good to see any entertainment content on this device. Micromax is trying their best this time to win the customers and in this review we tell you whether it is going to be the value for money device for you.

Build Quality, Design and Form Factor

The build quality of the canvas turbo is the best we have seen till date on any other canvas series phone we have seen before, it does look the smaller sized version of the Canvas Doodle 2. It feels solid in hands with matte finish non removable metal like back cover does make it feels just right in your hands. The design seems similar to the one we have seen on Canvas Doodle 2 but it is much lighter and portable to carry fits the palm just right. The form factor of this device is really good, as per dimensions 128.3 x 71 x 8.6 mm makes it really thin at 8.6 mm and weight of the device is well under 130 grams which also add a plus to it portability.

Camera Performance

IMG_0035

The rear camera is 13 MP with auto focus supported and it can also record 1080p video from rear camera at 30 fps, you can also use the front facing 5 MP camera which his fixed focus to take decent self portrait shots and you can do HD video chat. The day light performance of the rear camera is great and low light performance is also quite decent, more you can get to know through the camera samples below.

Display, Memory and Battery Backup

The display is 5 inch IPS LCD capacitive touch screen with 1920 x 1080 HD resolution gives you pixel density of the 441 pixels per inch and all this makes the display quite crisp and clear as far text is concerned. It has pretty good viewing angles as well. The in built memory of the device is around 16 Gb out of which around 12 GB approx is available to the user, you cannot use Micro SD card to expand the storage as there is no slot. The battery on the device is around 2000 mAh which is not very sufficient but you can get a day of backup with moderate usage which means limited use of the phone for entertainment but you good level of usage on the application level.

Software, Benchmarks and Gaming

The software UI on the device is almost stock android which makes it snappy and fast enough in UI transitions but you might see slight amount of minute lag while switching in between home screens, but overall performance of the device is good. Gaming performance of this device is not too good as it can play casual games fine with graphics without any issues but graphic intensive games like Frontline commando D Day, MC4 and Asphalt 7 show slight graphic lag and frame drops at times during game play but still you can play these games. This is mainly not because of the bad hardware or GPU but because the device have Power VR SGX 544 MP GPU which cannot render graphic as smooth on 1080p display as compared to the 720p display where it performs real good. The benchmarks figures are given below.

Benchmark Scores

  • Quadrant Standard Edition: 4697
  • Antutu Benchmark: 12408
  • Nenamark2: 33.8 fps
  • Multi Touch:  10 point

Sound, Video and Navigation

The sound volume from the loud speaker is good not too loud but it should work fine for most of user expectations, but the placement of the loud speaker is at the back side so, this design make the loudspeaker to get blocked accidentally when you place the device on a table or flat surface, the sound will get muffled in those cases. The sound quality from the earpiece was clear during voice calls. It can play HD videos at 720p without any issues but some 1080p videos might have audio and video sync issues. It can also be used for GPS navigation with the help of assisted GPS and it does have magnetic sensor for precise navigation, the GPS locking took around 5 minutes to get locked at outdoors and in indoors we could not get GPS coordinates locked to start the navigation. You will need internet connectivity to use navigation on the device as it requires some data download to lock the GPS.
