Build Quality, Design and Form Factor

The build quality of the Oppo R1 is just amazing as contrary from the belief that it comes from another Chinese manufacturer it does not have cheap quality of plastic. In terms of looks Oppo R1 looks like a enlarged version of iPhone 4 or 4S, on the edges you have metal and on the front and rear you have glass with Corning Gorilla Glass protection. The design seems to be inspired from iPhone 4th generation but it does make a distinctive image as well on its own. The form factor of this phone is good as its quite slim at 7.1 mm and the weight of the phone is around 140 gram with 5 inch display which makes it portable enough to carry around with you and it can slip into your jeans or trouser pocket easily.

Display, Memory and Battery Backup

It has IPS LCD display with 720p resolution at 294 pixel density offers good viewing angles and good color reproduction of colors, the display of the phone is also readable under sunlight and with auto brightness it will save a lot of battery and adjust it to look good as per the light conditions in which you are with the phone. The in built memory is around 16Gb out of which around 10 GB approx. is available and rest is taken up by color OS custom ROM which comes preinstalled on it, there is no SD card support. The battery backup of the phone is decent as it will easily give you more than 1 day backup with moderate usage, in case you use the phone for multimedia, then you can expect around 1 day of backup.

Software, Benchmarks and Gaming

Sound, Video and Navigation

The sound from the loudspeaker is loud and clear and the placement is on the bottom edge which is good position as the speaker does not get blocked even when you place the device on a table. On 720p display screen of this phone, you can play HD videos at 720p and 1080p resolution without any issues. GPS navigation also worked nicely and it was able to lock the GPS coordinates quickly but its faster only when you are in outdoors but indoors it might take more time due to weak GPS signals.

What We Liked

  • Great built quality
  • Good camera performance
  • Customized User Interface

What We Did Not Liked

  • Glossy back prone to fingerprints
  • Slightly big to hold and use with one hand

Conclusion and Price

Oppo R1 is a really good smartphone considering the hardware it has for day to day processing and the camera performance is also pretty good. It also comes with a great build quality and premium material being used which you may not see on other phones in the same price segment. It is available in the market for a price of approx Rs. 26,990 in the market which makes slightly costly compare to other android phones with similar hardware but if looks and build quality are important to you then it is the phone you should opt for.
