Build Quality, Design and Form Factor

It is not quite good on the build with nice rubberized matte finish back cover but its prone to scratches due to rubber finish but on the other hand this kind of finish does give a better rip over the device. The design is good is good but again as per the dimensions and feel it slightly thicker phone at 10.4 mm and the weight of 167 grams make it little heavier as compared to the other smartphones in the same price segment. The form factor is good because of the 4.7 display which is not too big or small so it can be easily carried every where and one handed usage is pretty good for this device.

Camera Performance

IMG_0830

The rear camera is 8 MP shooter which does pretty good job on the photos captured in day light and even in artificial but right amount of light scenarios but low light photos are average and the front camera is 2 MP fixed focus which can allow you to do a good quality video chat. The rear camera samples are below, you can get an idea about the camera on the device.

Display, Memory and Battery Backup

The display is IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors with 720 x 1280 pixels resolution spread over 5.0 inches and have ~294 ppi pixel density. The display is quite crisp and clear with pretty good viewing angles too but its not too good in the brightness levels. The in built memory of the device is 4 Gb and user available is around 1.4 Gb which is less but you can also move apps to the SD card and you can also specify the SD card as default for apps but device needs a restart when you change the default storage to apps installation. Battery backup is good enough around 18-19 hours for moderate usage but the moment you play some graphic intensive games on the device it become hot but still not uncomfortable to hold it. Battery drops the charge fast if you keep on playing games and device will also become slightly hot the back side below the camera, the Xolo power saver app will help you to get slightly better battery backup as well if you use it.

Software, Benchmarks and Gaming

The software is almost stock android and it is as snappy as it can be, gaming performance of the device is really good if you forget about heating a bit, it can play almost all the graphic intensive games without any issue and graphic lag.

Benchmark Scores

  • Quadrant Standard Edition: 4052
  • Antutu Benchmark: 13027
  • Nenamark2:  52.5 fps
  • Multi Touch:  5 point.

Sound, Video and Navigation

The sound which comes from the loudspeaker is pretty loud on this phone, it can also play HD videos at 720p and for some 1080p videos which are not supported you can play them with MX Player. You also have in built FM radio player app pre installed. It can also be used for GPS navigation as well but make sure you enable the same under location settings and GPS locking took us around 5 minutes and little more after two try attempt.

Conclusion and Price

Xolo Play is pretty decent device, it comes at price of around 14,500 approx and it’s a decent option for some serious gamer out there, however heating is one major issue while gaming but its not much to break the deal. Apart from this overall performance of the device in day to day processing is good and it can give good results on the battery backup as well with moderate usage. The limited storage problem can be solved with a MicroSD card on which you can install apps as well.
