Hugo Barra Leaves Xiaomi, Will Support Company As An Advisor

Hugo Barra Global VP at Xiaomi left the company today. He confirmed his resignation in a Facebook post. After working as a Group Product Manager at Google, he joined Xiaomi in 2013 with a great responsibility of making Xiaomi as a major player in the global smartphone industry. He has succeeded in bringing global outlook to the company; $1 billion annual revenue in India is the testimony to his success. Most recently, Barra launched the Redmi Note 4 in India.

Under his leadership, Xiaomi Global has forayed into many international markets as India, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Russia, Mexico, Poland, etc. He has been very instrumental in bringing various products ranging from smart devices to flagship smartphones to these markets.

He will be quitting the company at a critical point where Xiaomi is fighting hard against its Chinese peers to retain its market share. However, he expressed that he is leaving the company in the safe hands who can drive the momentum with the same vigor. He will be moving back to Silicon Valley to build a startup from scratch. However, he will continue to be the advisor of the company.

Nevertheless, the loss of a charismatic leader like Hugo Barra will be a big blow to the company. He has been the spotlight of Xiaomi’s product launches in India, and we are going to miss his technical prowess and quirks.

He culminated the post with a big thanks to all his colleagues in China and India and also to all Xiaomi fans across the world.
