Nokia N1 Tablet with Android Lollipop and Intel Atom SoC officially Announced at $249

Update: Nokia has licensed its brand and N1 industrial design to Foxconn, which will be handling engineering, sales and marketing for Nokia N1 tablet.

Nokia has been teasing to launch a different hardware today and the firm has come up with the first ever Nokia branded Android tablet. The slate is called Nokia N1 and it will be launched in China in February 2015 in time for the Chinese New Year with brand licensing agreement that extends to the OEM partner to manufacture, distribute and sell the device priced at $249 approximately.

With Nokia N1, the Finnish tech firm neatly evades the restrictions that were imposed by Microsoft to use the brand name for smartphones and feature phones.

The Nokia N1 features an aluminum unibody build and come in Natural Aluminum or Lava Gray color options. Also, the tablet is the first device to feature a reversible USB Type-C connector that is a specification meant for the next generation USB cables. However, most firms have kept this on hold for their major hardware upgrades that will be unveiled at the CES 2015 show in January. With this feature, the Nokia tablet is definitely the first high-end device to come with this specification, but the February release date will not make it first one to hit the retail shelves with the reversible connector.

The N1 runs on stock version of Android 5.0 Lollipop and features the Z Launcher which uses gestures that let users scribble a letter or two on the screen to pull out the required content such as apps and contacts. The Z Launcher will learn those apps that are in use and predict and highlight them with time.

Talking of specifications, the Nokia N1 features a 7.9 inch IPS LED backlit display boasting a screen resolution of 2048×1536 pixels. This screen is further protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for scratch resistance and uses the laminated zero air gap technology. The tablet employs a 64-bit 2.3 GHz Intel Atom Z3580 quad core processor coupled with a PowerVR G6430 GPU, 2 GB RAM and 32 GB of inbuilt storage that cannot be expanded.

Nokia N1 flaunts an 8 MP rear auto focus camera with support for 1080p video recording and a 5 MP front facing selfie camera. Connectivity options onboard include Wi-Fi with MIMO, Bluetooth 4.0 and micro USB with reversible Type-C connector as mentioned above. The N1 tablet from Nokia is energized by a 5,300 mAh battery and sports stereo speakers as well.
