Premier domestic player Micromax recently released the Micromax Canvas MAd A94, a device with mediocre specs but a feature which would let you earn money while using the device. Yes, you heard it right, users of the Canvas Mad can actually earn while they use the device! This is done by viewing ads via the MAd! application that comes bundled with in device.
Nonetheless, it is probably discussion of specs that we are here for, so lets get going.

Display
I personally am a fan of this particular display size of 4.5 inches. While its pretty clear I’m not into movies, but it also means I’m able to comfortably fit the device in my pocket. On the other hand, most first time smartphone buyers usually prefer a device with a screen measuring 5 inches or greater, which is where Micromax might lose out on some buyers.
An 854 x 480p resolution powers the 4.5 inch screen. While its not too bad, but the price does seem to suggest that it could’ve been better, qHD maybe.
Camera and Storage
As you can see in the specs sheet above, the device comes with dual 5MP cameras which isn’t much of a commonplace in the Indian smartphone industry. While those looking for exceptional rear camera shots will clearly not be pleased, the Canvas Mad might suit the select few who’re interested in self ‘selfie’ portraits and/or video chats.
Storage on the device is a paltry and disappointing 4GB. Again, Micromax gives you consolation in the form of a microSD slot which you can (and probably will) use to expand storage.
Processor and Battery
The device comes with a Broadcom 1.2GHz quad core processor, which is quite a bit of a departure from the usual MediaTek strategy for the smartphone maker. In fact, the phone uses the same BCM23550 chipset that we previously saw in the XOLO Q1000 Opus, which is a higher priced devices with somewhat better specs, RAM being the major factor. Performance will more or less be at par with the MediaTek counterpart – MT6589, but considering there’s only 512MB RAM you shouldn’t expect fluidity all around.
It comes with an 1800mAh battery which probably will find it tough to take you through one work day without another stint with the wall plug. Carrying your charger/power bank might turn out to be a wise idea.
Form Factor and Competitors
Design
The device does look good with the candy bar form factor. The extended chin gives it a distinct look, differentiating it from other budget devices from Micromax and other players.

While the gimmicky ‘get paid to watch ads’ thing might get Micromax a few buyers initially, those with an eye for intricacies will find out that the device is indeed not worth the 8,490 INR price tag it comes with. Of course, prices will go down eventually – but then time is more than just valuable in this cut-throat industry. It would be a good idea to look out for deals on devices mentioned in the competitors list above, if you aren’t a fan of earning money while using your phone.
