ZTE Grand X Quad Lite Quick Review, Price And Comparison

Here’s another device on the block to compete against virtually innumerable quad core devices from domestic and Chinese manufacturers – the ZTE Grand X Quad Lite. This device is also one among the 6 new devices launched by ZTE in India on the 19th of July, marking their entry into the massive budget smartphone market of the country. ZTE will indeed face an uphill task while trying to make a mark in the market while trying to compete against the likes of Micromax and Karbonn, brands which have been in the market for a long time now and are household names now.

However, the device does pack some serious power and pricing is extremely competitive as well. These are two things we wish to see with every release; and the ZTE Grand X Quad Lite checks all boxes here.

Camera And Internal Storage

The device surprisingly comes with only a 5MP main camera. Why we say this is surprising because being a new entrant into a competitive market, you usually expect a brand to offer something extra in order to catch the buyer’s attention, much like what Zopo did with the ZP980 (13MP camera, a first in the market in the range). However, ZTE have roped in a few features which should catch your attention. More about those in a while.

The rear camera on the device is an austere 0.3MP unit which makes it sounds more like a 6000 INR device than a 15,000 INR one. However, ZTE should find themselves lucky because many in India still don’t use 3G which pretty much rules out the usage of a front camera (video calls).

As far as storage is concerned, the phone comes with a standard (on Mediatek devices at least) 4GB set. A part of this is taken by the Android OS, while some more is reserved for apps. Usually, about 2.2 GB is what the user gets to store files. This makes the use of microSD cards pretty much inevitable.

Processor And Battery

The phone packs  decently powerful 1.2 GHz quad core processor. Although the make of this is not yet specified, we assume (no points for guessing) it comes from Mediatek. A 1.2 GHz quad core makes for quite a powerful processor, which glides though daily tasks and handles hardware intensive stuff pretty well, at the same time. Due to this, the processor at times tends to be power-hungry which in turn has an effect on the battery life of the device.

However, the phone can afford a power hungry processor due to the fact that it packs a 2500mAh battery, which is among the best features of the phone. We rarely see batteries of such potential in budget phones, and this comes as a sweet surprise we’d take any day.

Display And Features

Keeping up with the trend, ZTE include a 5 inch display on the Grand X Quad Lite. A 5 inch screen is the sort of size which comes in between a phone and a phablet, and serves almost both purposes at once.  However, the resolution on this 5 inch panel isn’t up to standards; the phone features a resolution of only 960×540 pixels, which seems slightly underpowered for such a device.

We would have liked to see a 720p display on the device, which would have meant the phone would have faced competition against the likes of the Videocon A55HD, which packs a 720p display. This might turn out to be a deal-breaker for quite a few out there, especially those who tend to use their phones for multimedia purposes.

Comparison

The list of phones which can compete against this new release from ZTE is virtually endless. Listing all competitors isn’t an option here; but the most popular from the list would be: Micromax Canvas HD, Micromax Canvas 2 Plus, XOLO Q800, XOLO Q1000, Videocon A55HD, etc.

Model ZTE Grand X Quad Lite
Display 5 inches 960×540 qHD

Conclusion

The phone offers decent specs in a nice form factor. ZTE is a huge manufacturer back in China, and is known for producing quality hardware since quite a long time now. We have been seeing dongles and other peripheral from ZTE, but this is the first time we see Android powered phones from ZTE in India.

The device should offer a good build quality. Apart from that, the phone comes with the wireless charging feature, which means you can charge the phone without having to go through the hassles of finding and connecting wires. This is something new for a device featuring in the budget range, and we definitely like it.

The pricing of the device could have been a little better, however we expect a fall in prices sooner than later.
