HD Voice or Voice over LTE (VoLTE) is a new thing, emerging in India lately. If you are one of those who don’t really know what it is or how it will affect you, don’t worry. Along with that, I will also try to include a list of operators in India that are providing this service as of writing this article.

HD Voice

What It Is?

VoLTE or HD Voice is a technology based on the LTE technology, a variant of 4G mobile networks. VoLTE basically allows you to place a call over a high-speed data connection itself, which allows you to keep your current data connection active, and place a call simultaneously.

How It Works?

VoLTE or HD Voice works by placing a call simply over the high-speed 4G LTE data connection itself and hence does not disrupt your data connection. So you could be downloading a file from the internet while on a call. In places where you don’t have VoLTE when you place a call, your data connections gets disrupted and then the call is placed.

What Do You Need to Use It?

To be able to use HD Voice or VoLTE, you will need a smartphone that is compatible with that technology. In India, a small percentage of phones currently support this technology, but with the expansion of 4G in India, VoLTE is expected to become a part of our lives very soon. This is why a lot of smartphone manufacturers in India are planning to launch their phones which are capable of this technology. Companies like LG, Intex, Micromax and Lenovo are the ones planning to launch their devices with these features soon. Currently, mostly the iPhones in India are the ones that support VoLTE.

VoLTE requires the mobile network providers to have their LTE bands on the 2300 MHz frequency, which currently Airtel, Aircel and the Reliance JIO network have with them. Airtel has launched its 4G LTE services in around 22 circles in the country and out of these, 9 have support for VoLTE. Reliance JIO, which is expected to be launched by the end of this year will be providing VoLTE nationwide with their launch of 4G services all over the country. With the launching of such services in India, the demand for devices that are compatible with such a technology will definitely increase and hence it would be made available by a lot of companies in the coming months.

Which Phones Support VoLTE (Voice Over LTE)?

Samsung recently launched Galaxy J5 and J7 which support VoLTE technology. Most of Samsung’s higher end models also support voice calling on 4G.

The LG G4 Stylus also supports VoLTE, LG G4 and other high end phones support VoLTE. Recently launched 3rd gen Moto G and the Sony Xperia Z5 and Z5 Premium series phones also support VoLTE.

Phones with hardware chipsets from Qualcomm, such as Snapdragon 615, 617, 820, 810 also have hardware support for VoLTE. These models includes Moto X Style, Yutopia, Moto G Turbo, Yu Yureka Plus etc.

Note: However, the feature may be turned off on the software side and will require a manufacturer OTA update for activation and then you can use it, but some phone have this feature enabled by default as well.
