The Micromax Canvas Doodle was released a few days back, and it managed to create quite a lot of buzz thanks to the internal hardware it carries. People have asked us for a comparison review of the Canvas Doodle with the Sony Xperia U, and we do think these two phones are head-to-head in a way.
The Micromax Canvas Doodle is aimed at a specific audience, that is, the people who’re looking for decent hardware at a good price, and who are ready to give up on a little processing power to get a processor from one of the major manufacturers.
On the other hand, the Sony Xperia U boasts of great build quality and good looks. The Xperia U however comes with only a dual core processor whereas the Canvas Doodle packs a quad core processor.
Display And Processor
The Canvas Doodle comes with a huge 5.3 inch display, which makes it a phablet while the Xperia U on the other hand comes with a rather small 3.5 inch display. The 3.5 inch display panel on the Xperia U has a resolution of 480×854 pixels, while the Canvas Doodle packs the same resolution on a much larger 5.3 inch screen.
The pixel density on the Xperia U is much higher at about 280ppi, while the Canvas Doodle does not have a very high density at just 185ppi. So, it would depend on your needs as to what size of display suits you better since there is a huge difference between a 3.5 inch screen and a 5.3 inch screen.
The Canvas Doodle, as stated above, comes with a quad core processor from Qualcomm. It is the Qualcomm MSM8225Q Snapdragon, clocked at a frequency of 1.2GHz. On the other hand, the Sony Xperia U comes with a dual core NovaThor U8500 processor, which is clocked at 1GHz.
Although you might think that the Canvas Doodle is the obvious winner here, it is not so. The Snapdragon MSM8225Q on the Canvas Doodle is based on the Cortex A5 architecture, which is not as powerful as the Cortex A9 found on the Xperia U. But, the Canvas Doodle has 2 extra cores, so we would say that both processors are on par, with the Canvas Doodle having a slight edge over the Xperia U.
Camera And Memory
The Canvas Doodle does really well here with a 8MP main rear camera paired up with a 2MP front, while the Xperia U falls a little short of it with 5MP rear and a VGA front. This makes Canvas Doodle the clear winner in terms of sheer numbers.
The Xperia U comes with 8GB of in built storage whereas the Canvas Doodle has only 4GB of storage. With double the amount of ROM, the Sony Xperia wins the storage battle.
Battery And Features
The Xperia U comes with a rather small 1320mAh battery, which would find it hard to take you through one day. On the other hand Micromax has gone big with q 2100mAh battery in the Canvas Doodle. But also worth keeping in mind is the fact that the Canvas Doodle comes with a much larger display which would use up much more of the battery’s juice. However, the difference is not enough to make both devices equal, the Canvas Doodle should still win this battle. We would say that the Canvas Doodle has a better battery overall, considering the size of the screen too.
Here are the key specs of both these devices put in a table which should help you compare them:

Conclusion
Both devices are great in their own way. The Xperia U would better suit a person who wants better mobility, i.e., a smaller device whereas the Canvas Doodle might suit people looking for a big screen, and the added functionality of a stylus. Keep in mind, the Canvas Doodle is a dual SIM device whereas the Xperia U has a single SIM, so the Canvas Doodle might be the one for people who are coming from a dual SIM device or are looking for the same. Since there is not much difference in the price, we would say that the Canvas Doodle wins this battle by a small margin, but we would also like to add that with either phone you cannot go wrong since the Sony undoubtedly carries better build than any Mircomax phone.
