Micromax Canvas 4 Quick Review, Price and Comparison

After months of speculations, leaks and promotional teasers Micromax has finally unveiled Micromax Canvas 4 with 1GB RAM and Quad core processor priced at Rs. 17,999. We covered this launch live on our live blog post along with the news coverage of its Official specifications. Micromax has been promoting this flagship phone through promotional teasers which created a huge hype with over 1 million users following Micromax daily on their Facebook page. This phone comes with a unique “blow air to unlock”  feature. Micromax’s last flagship device Canvas A116 HD garnered huge sales numbers, so obviously everyone expected this device to have spectacular specifications. Lets see what new Canvas 4 has to offer.

Camera and Internal storage

Only certain feature about Canvas 4 was its 13 MP camera along with its BSI sensor as was abundantly clear from its Official pictures. This device has a 5 MP secondary camera in front for those interested in video calling. The primary camera has a 5 element lens (like in iPhone 5) and is enabled with vertical panorama mode. The camera features are similar to recently launched Karbonn Titanium S9, which also has 13 MP and 5 MP cameras. This device is expected to give head on competition to Canvas 4. Canvas A116 HD has 8 MP and 2 MP cameras, thus Canvas 4 shows improvement in camera feature with respect to its predecessor.

Canvas 4 comes with 1 GB ram and 16 GB internal storage. This storage is expendable up to 32 GB using a microSD card. 1 GB RAM will give you some lag when you engage in graphic intensive gaming but should suffice for other practical purposes. This storage capacity is also similar to that of Karbonn Titanium S9 HD.

Processor and Battery

This phone is powered by MediaTek MT6589 processor, which is a Quad core processor based on ARM Cortex A7 architecture and the cores are clocked at a frequency of 1.2 GHZ. This processor is almost ubiquitous in quad core Smartphones of this price range in India, including Micromax’s previous device Canvas A116 HD. This will again be sufficient to give you smooth UI transitions and Multitasking, but might give you some lag during extensive gaming. Micromax has not changed processor or RAM specifications from Canvas A116 HD this is a little disappointing. Canvas 4 employs latest Android 4.2.1 jelly bean operating system.

Battery capacity of this phone is rated at 2000 mAh which is less than that of Karbonn titanium S9 at least on paper. This is again not an improvement over Canvas A116 HD.

Display Features

This phone comes with a 5 inch IPS LCD capacitive touch screen with an HD resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels, thus giving you a pixel density of 294 pixels per inches along with wide viewing angles. This display supports a color depth of 16 M colors and is covered by gorilla glass 2 which makes it further abuse resistant. This though being an above average display is not an improvement over Canvas A116. the display of Karbonn Titanium S9 is a bigger at 5.5 inch, although number of pixels are same in both devices, thus ppi will be a little less in Titanium S9

Comparison

Canvas 4 is not much of an improvement over its predecessor Canvas A116 HD . Many significant features are same like RAM capacity, Processor and display. Though there has been an improvement in internal storage capacity (from 4 GB to 16 GB) and camera features. Canvas A116 HD is available for around Rs. 13000.

Karbonn Titanium S9 has almost the same key specifications as Canvas 4, except for slightly bigger display (5.5 Inch) and higher battery capacity of 2600 mAh. This device however is more expensive at 19,990 INR.

Conclusion and Price

Apart from camera features and much highlighted exclusive unlock mechanism, that is blow air to unlock, the specifications of this device are rather disappointing.Micromax did not out do Karbonn Titanium S9 with respect to specifications and did not outperform Canvas A116 with the expected margin. Although the pricing of this phone is not very high and you will get quite good hardware at a competitive price range which will suffice your general purpose usage needs and moderate gaming needs. Micromax Canvas 4 has been priced at 17,999 INR
