Build Quality, Design and Form Factor

Huawei ascend mate feels solid and comes with quite good build quality which can resist some drops and falls as well from waist height, the front glass has corning gorilla glass 2 technology which protects it from getting scratches over time. The design is a unibody design with little different in the color variant as the white version of this device has a matte finish back side but the black color variant has a rubberized back side which gives a better grip. The device is quite big to hold in one hand but on the other hand its not very heavy at 198 grams comparing it with other tablets as it fulfills the gap of a phone and tablet. As per Huawei it is designed to fit the jeans pocket and we tested the same and it does fit in inside the jeans pocket without any issues.

Display, Memory and Battery Backup

It has 6.1 inch IPS+ LCD capacitive touch screen with 720 x 1280 HD resolution with ~241 pixels per inch which is good enough to make the display smooth on your eyes, you wont notice the pixels with naked eyes. The in built memory is 8 Gb with 4.68 GB user available and you also have the option to expand the storage with the help of MicroSD card slot. The battery backup of the device is around one day approx with moderate usage which includes 1 hour of video playback, half n hour of music playback and half hour of calling and some other things done like social apps usage and internet browsing.

Software, Benchmarks and Gaming

The software UI on the device is Huawei emotion UI which runs on the top of android, its not slow but it not as fast as vanilla android experience. The gaming performance is quite good on this device as it can play almost any of the high graphic intensive game provided you have space on the phone.

  • Antutu Benchmark: 14218
  • Nenamark2:  51.5 FPS

Camera Performance

The rear camera is a 8 MP shooter which produces day light images with good color reproduction but details are not too good in the photos taken in the low light or artificial light. The front camera on the other hand is 1 MP with fixed focus but it can do a HD video record and chat at 720p resolution at 30 FPS

Sound, Video and Navigation

The sound from loud speaker is quite loud but due to the design the speaker at the back might get covered if you place the device on a table and also it can be easily blocked in landscape mode with your fingers. You can play HD videos both at 720p and 1080p without any audio video sync issues on this device. The device can be used for Navigation as well with the help of assisted GPS but make sure to enable the same under location settings.

Conclusion and Price

Huawei Ascend Mate is a nice device if you are looking for a one device which can play the role of both a tablet and a phone, considering its size it is quite big with the thin bezel and the curved back make it quite slim and easy to carry, the one handed usage is kind of limited but still there are options which allows you to do things like dialing a number with one hand. It comes with some decent hardware and rightly priced at Rs. 24,900 which makes worth the money device.
