BSNL-Champion Trendy 531 Quick Review, Price and Comparison

The BSNL-Champion Trendy 531 is the latest device to jump on the quad core bandwagon. The phone was released earlier today, and along with a up-to-date 5.3 inch screen, the phone packs a quad core processor clocked at 1.2 GHz. We’ve now lost count of the number of quad core devices available in the market, but is the BSNL-Champion Trendy 531 worthy of standing out and being remembered? Let us discuss more about this device, and then decide for yourself!

Camera and Internal Storage

The device tried to impress with its 13MP main camera which sits at the rear. While we see most flagships of today showing off 13MP units, it is not uncommon to see devices from Chinese and domestic manufacturers try to pull off the same. However, such devices are usually priced close to over the 15k INR mark. This is where the Trendy 531 shines; the device costs 13,999 INR which makes it one of the cheaper devices to feature a quad core processor and a 13MP camera to go with it.

On the front of the device sits an again impressive 5MP unit. However, these are just numbers; real life performance may or may not be true to your expectations. Regardless, the 5MP unit should be more than enough for video calls as well as for self-portraits.

The phone does a standard job at the storage where it comes with (yes you guessed it) 4GB ROM along with a microSD slot for expansion up to 32GB.

Processor and Battery

The Trendy 531 packs a quad core processor clocked at 1.2 GHz per core. Although the make of this processor has not be revealed to us, it would be safe to believe that it is the MT6589 from MediaTek. The quad core processor will perhaps be enough for those who see the device as an upgrade. Coming from a single core processor or even a dual core budget phone, you will definitely feel the difference. As far as we’re concerned, the MT6589 (and the MT6589T subsequently) is the best low cost processor available in the market today.

In another attempt to impress, the Trendy 531 features a super-impressive 3200 mAh battery which promises up to 2 days of usage. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3, which is priced almost at 4 times the cost of this device, comes with the same battery capacity. This should give you a fair idea of how badly the Trendy 531 wants to impress, which is a rather good sign for the buyer.

Display and Features

The device features a 5.3 inch screen in true phablet spirit. A screen of 5.3 inches should probably be good enough for most tasks such as mails, video and other multimedia, chat, etc. even though phablets with much larger (up to 6.4 inches!) are readily available in the market.

Unfortunately, the resolution of this 5.3 inch panel has not been specified which bars us from speaking about the display further. As and when we come to know of the resolution on the panel, the article would be updated.

Looks and Connectivity

The Trendy 531 features a rather generic budget device look, which is like a Samsung phablet minus the trademark home button. The Trendy 531 comes with 3 capacitive buttons on the front. On the back, the device comes with logos of both brands behind the inception of the device – BSNL and Champion, which looks rather odd to us.

The phone features the regular connectivity set with WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, 3G, etc. radios available on the device.

Comparison

Among the heap of devices that are similar in specification to the Trendy 531, the XOLO Q800, Wickedleak Wammy Passion Z, iBall Andi 5h Quadro, etc. come to the fore of the mind as we write this.

Conclusion

It has to be said that the result of the BSNL-Champion collaboration, the Trendy 531, packs some punch for the price it comes for. A 13MP rear and a 5MP front camera, 3200mAh battery are specifications unheard of in this price range. However, the device for sure isn’t a looker; it is among the not so pretty devices that we’ve come across of late. However, the impressive specification sheet along with good availability and after-sales support can do wonders for this new collaboration.
