Gionee is upping the ante in the budget smartphone segment by establishing itself as a premium brand and has been successful in doing that as well. It has softly launched the Gionee Gpad G4 for Rs 18,999 and the smartphone has a lot going in its favour. It fills the gap for the need of a big screen device in Rs 15,000-20,000 line up for the Chinese manufacturer. Let us have a quick review of the smartphone.

Gionee-Gpad-G4

Camera and Storage

It has a pretty well taken care of imaging department. It gets a 13MP rear camera with LED Flash which has a BSI sensor and  f/2.2 aperture for brilliant picture quality and low light photography. It also gets the ability to record videos in 1080p and a 5MP front snapper. The same is at par with the competition but produces better pictures.

There is 16GB of internal storage available which gives you plenty of space to store all your applications. You also get microSD card support to expand the memory by another 32GB.

Processor and Battery

The Gionee Gpad G4 has been bestowed upon by the MT6589T turbo processor which has four of its cores clocked 1.5 GHz . A PowerVR SGX 544MP2 GPU complements it pretty well but the 1GB RAM might just let you down. A 2GB RAM would have made it a  perfect deal.

A 3,200 mAh battery gets thing done pretty well and Gionee has done well to provide the device with a battery that would give it the juice to last it a little over a day.

Display and Features

A 5.7 inch IPS display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels adorns the front of the smartphone and is based on One Glass Solution technology for added protection. The 720p display might seem a bit stretched on a bigger screen but the IPS unit with good viewing angles makes up for the same.

It runs on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and will get a update to Android 4.3 as well if Gionee plans on being in India for a longer run. Just in case, if you are lucky, you might just get to taste KitKat goodness as well. It gets in-built DTS audio, gesture features and  Gionee Xender App.

Looks and Connectivity

The smartphone looks way better than any other device in its league, courtesy of the aluminium body it brings to the table. Its dimensions of 163.5 x 81.3 x 7.95 mm make it a pretty sleek device for the size it brings along with itself.

Connectivity is taken care of pretty well with the presence of 3G, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth and GPS with A-GPS. NFC being made available would have been welcome but it is not that we are complaining about the same either.

Comparison

Xolo Q3000 and Intex Aqua Octa Core will emerge as its prime competitors which offer a better spec sheet at the same price point. But what makes the Gionee Gpad G4 stand out is its aluminium body. Other competitors include Nokia Lumia 1320 and Samsung Galaxy Grand 2.

Conclusion

Gionee Gpad G4 comes across as a well rounded off device with an amazing  build quality. A price tag lower by a couple of grands would have done wonders for it. We’d suggest you wait a bit for the price to come down if you are hell bent of buying this one.

  1. Thank you abhishek for this kind of review on gionee gpad g4 I really wanted that. But still there is a question which I am asking to every tech geeks online but didn’t get yet.
Q: does it support usb otg or not ?
another more thing i will really appreciate that if you can put a indepth video review.

any way thank you and good wishes.

    • we can not confirm it as of yet but the spec sheet doesn’t mention USB OTG. Most Gionee phones don’t support USB OTG but we will have to do a full review to confirm it.

      • I think being a phablet phone this property should be added because the phablet mostly for entertainment purpose. If there is any possibility of supporting otg by rooting the phone please mention it.

        • yes, Gpad G4 might come with OTG support. Their is a hardware chip for OTG support and some software drivers are also required. In devices like Nexus 7 you can get OTG support after rooting because the hardware chip is present. In most other devices rooting wont help. we will have to wait for the full review to know for sure if the device supports OTG

  2. I have recently purchased Gionee G4 and found that (1) its camera result, as said 13 mp, is not true. (2) it is not connected with pc win xp version to connect net. Anybody suggest the remedy please. Thanks and regards,

    • initially in mediatek camera UI the pixel sets to lower resolution. If you have mistaken it then go to camera settings and set to full resolution.

one more thing just test an usb otg cable and reply whether it supports or not. I am going to buy it please tell me the over all lok, feel and performance. if it is possible put a video review.

  5. I want to buy Gionee Gpad G4. As per the review, we cannot remove its battery. My samsung smart phone battery got swollen and i had to change it. Here in gionee’s case i won’t be able to figure out if there is any problem with the battery. So whats the remedy?

    • non removable batteries have their disadvantages in the long run, but they can be replaced at Gionee service center. It just takes more time and money

      • Thank you for replying. I was concerned about this issue because now a days i hear alot about the mobile battery exploding. So if I can’t see the battery how would i come to know? But i will give a thought on your advice. Thank you !
