Design and Build

With Nokia Lumia 630, design diverts from polycarbonate Lumia design language and shifts more towards the Asha series smartphones, even more so with the absent dedicated camera key, which was present in all Lumia devices we have seen so far. The poly carbonate body smartphone is good to hold in hand with matte finish on back cover. It is much lighter than Nokia Lumia 625 and has similar body thickness.

In spite of fairly large bezels below the screen, the phone comes with virtual navigation keys. This further reduces screen size by a margin. We couldn’t test if it went in all immersive mode while playing videos, but the keys were stuck permanent during all other operations.

The 4.5 inch IPS LCD ClearBlack display was fairly usable, though not dazzling. It won’t be a deal breaker in this price range. The display is also protected by corning gorilla glass 3, a much appreciated feature in this price range.

Camera and Internal Storage

The LED flash is missing. The camera is at par with what we generally see in low end Lumia devices and we will rate it better than most other 5 MP units in budget price range.

Also missing is the front camera, but how much it will be missed depends on person to person. The rear camera can record 720p videos at 30fps and several features are missing from the Nokia Camera app. Nokia has enhanced the camera UI with an added burst mode.

No complaints in the internal storage department either. The storage can be further extended to 128 GB using MicroSD support which will keep everyone happy.

Software

Software is the key here. Nokia Lumia 630 brings with a notification center, which Nokia has termed Action center. The action center comes with some quick access settings and icons along with notifications from an app. If you swipe right to dismiss one notification from an app, all notifications from that app will be wiped off the screen, unlike Android notification center.

The Live tiles can now update in real time and you can also select pictures as wallpapers behind the tiles. There is also option for transparent tiles. The Cortana Voice assistant will come pre installed in the phone but we doubt if it will be as efficient as Google now.

The Cortana Voice assistant combines the best of both Android and iOS (Siri) but is dependent on Bing search engine for loads of stuff. Bing is not as evolved in India as it is in China, USA and UK and that will be a down side. Nokia won’t be bringing this feature to India this year.

Other features include Swype like keyboard which you will have to activate from settings, storing apps on SD card, New and more productive calendar app and much more. You can read the details of added features on our Windows Phone 8.1 article.

Battery and Chipset

Battery backup has never been a major issue with Nokia smartphones. The 1830 mAh li ion battery will provide with ample 600 hours of standby time and 13 hours of talk time on 3G, Music playback time will be 58 hours which is good but not as impressive. The battery is however non removable.

Nokia is using Snapdragon 400 chipset with 4 cortex A7 cores clocked at 1.2 GHz in this smartphone supported by only 512 MB RAM. This seems rather disappointing, but surprisingly, performance didn’t show much lag in our initial time. That might not translate into an equivalent real world performance.

Conclusion

Nokia Lumia 630 does lie in the affordable price segment but does not feel cheaper in hand. The specifications point towards a price which lies somewhere mid of Lumia 525 and Lumia 625. Nokia will launch this phone in India in first week of May, 2014 and we are eager to spend some more time with the Lumia 630. For now Nokia Lumia 630 dual SIM packs enough features to stand ground amidst of tough Android completion in the 10,000 INR to 15,000 INR price range.
