LG G3 VS Sony Xperia Z2 Comparison Overview

LG has just come up with its newest flagship model – The new LG G3, and early reviews point towards the fact that the device is a major upgrade over its earlier flagship model, the LG G2. The device looks and feels good, and as is apparent in the price range it will be launched at, will compete with various other top-end flagship devices. One such flagship is the water and dust resistant Sony Xperia Z2 – available for around Rs.48000. The device had come packed with excellent hardware and software features, and let us have a look at where these devices stand in comparison to each other.

Display and Processor

The LG G3 has a 5.5 inch True HD-IPS+ LCD display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels and the resulting pixel density of 432 ppi . It is the first flagship from among the top end models to get a QHD display, and users can expect a clean, crisp and clear display with perfect viewing angles on the device. In comparison, Sony has given a 5.2 inch IPS LCD capacitive touch screen display to the Xperia Z2 and the panel packs FHD resolution of 1920×1080 pixels that translates to 424 ppi pixel density. While the pixel density of both devices is nearly the same, higher resolution of the LG G3 display will result in a somewhat better display.

The LG G3 features a Snapdragon 801 MSM8975AC unit with its four Krait 400 cores ticking at 2.5 GHz, and the Adreno 330 GPU attached, alongside 2GB/3GB RAM for varying models. The Z2 comes with a 2.3 GHz quad-core Krait 400 processor on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC with the Adreno 330 GPU and 3 GB of RAM. Needless to say, these statistics speak for themselves and the users can expect both devices to be top performers.

Camera and Internal Storage

G3 has been launched with a 13MP camera unit at the back along with a LED flash and a 2MP secondary snapper. It comes with a new interesting feature where a special laser measures distance between the subject and the camera sensor in order to speed up autofocus.

On the other hand, the camera of the Xperia Z2 is a 20.7 MP Exmor RS mobile sensor with 4K video recording capability, and comes with the attractive background defocus feature that enable users to focus the subject and blur the background. The Secondary camera is a 2.2 MP snapper. Both LG and Sony have put lot of work in their camera’s are we are eager to see which one is better.

The G3 comes with 16GB and 32GB internal storage variants with expandable storage capacity of up to 128GB. The Z2 has similar storage capacity of 16 GB and those who find this insufficient can expand it up to a whopping 128 GB with the help of a micro SD card. Therefore, in this field the devices are well matched, with the exception of the LG G3 32 GB model.

Battery and Features

LG G3 comes with a removable 3000 mAh battery which is capable of providing good battery backup to this powerful device. LG says that it has used various technologies and measures such as adaptive frame rate, adaptive clocking and adaptive timing control to reduce battery consumption, but it is yet to be seen how this battery performs in daily usage. The Xperia Z2 battery capacity is 3,200 mAh and this power source is supplemented with the Battery STAMINA mode that saves a lot of power by deactivating the power hungry apps running in the background. The handset is rated to last for up to 19 hours of talk time and 740 hours of standby time on 3G networks.

The G3 will come on Android 4.4.2 KitKat and so does the X2, like other flagship top end models. G3 runs with the Optimus UI on top and this version of the UI is flattened and well laid out. Other features on the G3 include the Smart Keyboard, which is a resizable keyboard, Smart Notice, which provides suggestions and recommendations based on user behavior, phone usage patterns etc. and security features such as the Knock code. The Z2 too comes with various software features but its primary attraction is the IP55/IP58 rating of the device pointing towards the fact that the device is waterproof and dust resistant.

Price and Conclusion

Right now, the LG G3 is without a price tag but recent trends point towards the price being in the higher range, competing with flagships such as the Samsung S5 or with that of the Xperia Z2 itself, priced at Rs.48000.

Both devices offer similar performance to the users, with one variant of the G3 available with a comparatively less RAM. That is not to say that the Z2 will leave it behind where performance is concerned – G3’s processor is clocked much higher. Z2 does offer a better camera on paper, but users can be assured that G3 in itself is a very competitive and feature-packed device, and can be expected to offer a good Android experience to the users.
