Alcatel Idol X+ Unboxing, Hands on, Quick Review, Camera, Software and Overview HD

Design and Display

Alcatel One Touch Idol X plus looks quite attractive at first glance. The phone appears smaller and more comfy than other 5 inch display smartphones. If we talk numbers, its 8.1 mm thick and weighs only 130 grams.

The power button is placed at the top which makes single handed usage tough. The Idol X plus flaunts a glossy textured back with metallic alloy rims running around the edges. The speaker grills are present at the bottom and thus the sound won’t be muffled when the phone is resting on its back.

Needless to say, the display is very sharp with 1080p full HD resolution and 441 pixels per inches and we liked the IPS LCD panel in terms of viewing angles, brightness (Good enough for decent outdoor usage) and popping color. The auto brightness works quite well in this phone. The display is also protected by Dragon Trail glass and features oleo-phobic smudge resistant coating.

Processor and RAM

The processor used is 2 GHz Octa core chipset, which we saw earlier in Micromax Canvas Knight. The RAM capacity is 2 GB. The chipset packs enough might to take on all kinds of basic and extreme tasks. Graphics will be handled by Mali 450 MP4 GPU which is part of the package. UI transitions were very fluid in our time with the device.

Camera and Internal Storage

The Primary camera with 13 MP sensor gave good low light performance in our initial testing even in low light condition. The noise was much lesser than expected and there were plenty of details as expected from a 13 MP shooter. The camera App is quite simple without any special feature, but it lets you toggle with ISO and Exposure settings. The front 2 MP camera can record 1080p videos as well and will provide with good selfies.

The Internal storage is only 16 GB and cannot be expanded any further. So you are stuck with 12.3 GB of user available storage. This will suffice for many users but not for all. We haven’t yet confirmed if the device supports OTG connectivity.

User Interface, Battery and Other Features

User interface is simple and colorful and is mostly stock Android 4.2 jelly bean. Icons are quite colorful and there are several preloaded apps, you might or might not want. It’s not very likely that it will be updated to Android 4.4 KitKat.

The battery capacity is 2500 mAh and with talk time assurance of over 16 hours on 3G and standby time of more than 600 hours (3G), I think you won’t have to worry about the battery backup. Battery however is non-removable and that comes with its share of drawbacks. MT6592 is a power efficient chipset and the backup claims from Alcatel seem plausible with a 2500 mAh battery.

Idol X+ offers HiFi audio sound output coupled with JBL headsets for rich multimedia experience. The loudspeaker (1 loudspeaker at the bottom not 2) seemed good in noisy environment, but we will have to hold back our judgment till final review.

Alcatel is also bundling Boomband health and fitness device with the smartphone which can monitor your sleep patern, steps taken, and calories burnt and works with other smartphones as well. The phone also comes with Noise cancelation headphones and Dual SIM (we will confirm later if its dual Active)

Conclusion, Price and Availability

Alcatel One Touch Idol X Plus is a value for money device which will be available from 12 AM on 3rd June 2014. We expect the phone to go out of stock pretty soon if you are planning to purchase it from the first batch. To sum it up, Alcatel One Touch Idol X+ is a wonderful smartphone with great display, great battery, powerful processor, JBL Headphones and Hi-Fi audio. The phone is however stuck on dated Android 4.2 jelly bean and has a non removable battery.
