Micromax Canvas Win W092 Hands On, Initial Review, Photos and Video

Apart from Micromax Canvas W121, Micromax also launched Canvas Win W092, which is perhaps the cheapest Windows Phone available in India as of now, to take on well established Lumia 525 and 520 which are selling for a couple of thousand more. Let’s take a better look at what we can get at the first rung of Windows Phone 8.1 Ladder.

Design, Form Factor and Display

The phone is made of polycarbonate and it’s definitely a few steps behind the likes of Lumia 520 or Lumia 525. The Glossy back cover is a finger print magnet and can be removed. The phone is quite thick and chunky with microUSB port and Audio jack both at the top. It does take design cues from Nokia X and Lumia devices. Speaker Grill is present at the back.

The display is 4 inches in size and sports WVGA resolution. The IPS LCD display is sensitive and good in terms of colors. The low display resolution won’t be a deal breaker on this display. There is lot of bezel below the display on which 3 capacitive buttons are present for efficient navigation.

Processor and RAM

Micromax has provided the same chipset as Canvas Win W121 on this trimmed down variant as well. The Chipset houses 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 200 Quad Core processor most likely based on 45nm process technology. The CPU is assisted by Adreno 302 GPU and 1 GB RAM, which is more than what an average Android phone offers at this price range.

Nokia Lumia 630 with Windows Phone 8.1 managed to sail smooth with its 512 MB RAM and the 1 GB RAM on Canvas Win W092 would be sufficient enough for decent performance. In our initial time with the device, UI transitions were smooth; we expect the same performance in the long run.

Camera and Internal Storage

The rear camera comes with a 5 MP Fixed focus senor which is not a great performer. It lacks in terms of details and colors, but we didn’t expect much at this price range. The camera is again much better on Lumia 520, but on this phone you will get a bonus front VGA shooter for video calling

The Internal storage is 8 GB and you can further extend it by another 32 GB using MicroSD card support. Needless to say, the storage will be sufficient for most users out there. With Windows phone 8.1, you can also transfer apps to MicroSD card.

User Interface and Battery

The battery capacity is 1500 mAh like most high end phones in Canvas series. Micromax didn’t reveal any backup data for Canvas Win W092 either and it’s too soon to comment on the same for now.

The home-screen greets you with familiar Windows Phone 8.1 tiled interface. The new Windows Interface brings several new enhancements like Action center and universal app support. The phone features Nokia HERE Maps as well, we expect a few other Nokia Apps will also be available via Windows Phone Store. You can also read list of Windows Phone 8.1 features for better insight.

Conclusion

Micromax Canvas Win A092 is the cheapest Windows Phone 8.1 based device in India but it doesn’t make grave compromises with user experience. The build Quality is ok and performance is more than what you can expect at this price range. If you intend on only basic usage, it will be a much better alternative to Nokia Asha series or most other low cost entry level Androids.
