Apple introduced 64 bit architecture last year with its iPhone 5s based on ARMv8 ditching the age old ARMv7 architecture and now several Android phones with Snapdragon 615 64 bit octa core Soc are expected to be unveiled very soon.
Qualcomm official Weibo account has hinted that its Snapdragon 615 64 bit SoC will be heading to several smartphones very soon. The Snapdragon 615 (MSM8939) is a 28 nm Octa core SoC which was unveiled in Feburary this year.
The chipset based on ARM’s latest energy efficient design, employs 8 Cortex A53 based cores – 4 clocked at 1.8 GHz and 4 at 1 GHz, all aided by Adreno 405 GPU, integrated LTE modem. One core cluster will be used for demanding tasks, while the other will handle basic needs. Both clusters won’t be operational at the same time.
The chipset was mainly designed for Chinese markets and perhaps that’s where we can see initial set of Snapdragon 615 devices to popup. We can expect these upcoming smartphones to be presented at IFA, in Berlin next month.
There is still no news of when Snapdragon 810 and Snapdragon 808 high end 64 bit Qualcomm SoC debut in mobile devices. Switching to ARMv8 architecture will make devices more energy efficient, while other advantages aren’t very well pronounced yet.
