Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini Quick Review, Price and Comparison

Samsung has launched the mini variant of its 2014 flagship Galaxy S5 priced at 26,499 INR. The price is definitely less than the launch price of Galaxy S4 Mini, which was first introduced 1 year back. Samsung is also offering better hardware specs, but is it good enough to battle in fierce Android Market.

Camera and Internal Storage

The rear 8 MP rear shooter and the front 2.1 MP camera can shoot full HD 1080p videos. Samsung hasn’t changed the camera aspect much as compared to last year’s S4 mini. If you are looking for a camera specific phone, perhaps HTC Desire 816 selling in the same price bracket is worth considering. There is single LED flash at the back, accompanied by heart rate monitor.

The internal storage is Ample 16 GB and you get the option to augment it by another 64 GB using MicroSD card support. The storage should be sufficient for most users out there and won’t be a deal breaker at this price point. You also get 50 GB of free cloud storage.

Processor and Battery

The processor used is 1.4 GHz quad core Exynos 3 Quad 3470, with 4 cortex A7 cores and Mali 400 MP4 GPU clocked at 450 MHz. This is the first time we will be seeing this chipset in India. Aided by 1.5 GB RAM, it is expected to provide smooth multitasking.

Battery capacity is 2100 mAh and Samsung claims 10 hours of 3G talk time and up to 47 hours of music playback which sounds decent enough.

Display and Other Features

The Super AMOLED display is 4.5 Inches in size with 720p HD resolution amounting to 326 pixels per inches. The pixel density is quite apt considering the display size. There is no word on Gorilla Glass 3 and this is mildly disappointing.

Samsung has loaded all major Galaxy S5 features like fingerprint sensor, heart rate monitor, dust and water resist certification in the mini variant as well. Other features include AGPS, GLONASS, WiFi and 3G. NFC is another connectivity option that is missing. Software is Android 4.4 Kitkat layered with latest TouchWiz.

Comparison

In the same price bracket you can find worthy handsets like HTC Desire 816, Nexus 5 and Galaxy S4. However, not everyone wants a large display handset, if you are looking for something compact you can consider Moto X and Sony Xperia Z1 Compact as worthy alternatives.

Conclusion

Samsung Galaxy S5 doesn’t flaunt the best spec sheet for its asking price of 26,499 INR and you could very well go for Last years full blown flagship Galaxy S4 for few extra bucks, but the appeal of the handset lies in capturing the design and feel of latest Samsung Flagship for 10,000 INR lesser. For the same purpose, it does a better job than Galaxy S4 Mini. So if you are particularly attached to the high end Galaxy S5 and want to enjoy the panache associated with it at a lesser price or perhaps you are among the rare few looking for a nicely crafted smaller handset that fits in your hand – you can consider the Mini Variant.
