We have heard several rumors about Nokia hinting a comeback and now China based Mydriver reports that the Nokia team responsible for N9 is hard at work, designing a new flagship smartphone which will be running Android OS and manufactured via ODMs (Like Compal, Foxconn, etc).

At a recent conference call with its shareholders, Nokia chief financial officer Timo Ihamuotila talked about the power of Nokia brand, associated with mobile phone brands in emerging markets.

“We will, of course, carefully assess what would be the best way for us to maximize the value of the Nokia brand, also taking into account that we’re in the lock-up period still in the Microsoft transaction regarding our possibility to use the brand and we have recognized that Nokia brand is the most valuable from recognition perspective in the area of mobile phones and mobile devices,” said Timo Ihamuotila.

For now, the Nokia Brand is exclusively licensed by Microsoft, till 31st December 2015. Though the company can test waters by ODM manufactured devices, but the the company cannot use Nokia Brand before 2016.

One year is a long time in tech world. Meanwhile, Nokia is still associated with smartphone business via HERE Maps. Even if Nokia is planning on a comeback, it won’t be easy rebuilding a company from scratch, as Microsoft also acquired entire Nokia phone division staff. Nokia will have to ensure the same trusted build quality or taint its most valuable asset, the Nokia brand.
