Design, Build and Display

The 4.5 inch display and associated footprint makes this phone easier to handle, even though it is not the lightest or slimmest device in its class. Arya A1 Plus is plastic build phone with chrome finished edges and a circular perforated speaker grill at the back. The hardware buttons provide good feedback, and the software keys below the display are not backlit. It doesn’t feel like a premium smartphone, but it is well built device. We have no complains with the build quality at this price point.

The IPS LCD OGS display has good viewing angles and colors. Since a plastic scratch guard was pre-installed on the device, the touch didn’t feel butter smooth. qHD resolution didn’t seem scarce on the 4.5 Inch display.

Processor and RAM

image

Chipset is the standard MT6582A with 1 GB RAM, which is same as what we saw on Arya Z2. Out of 1 GB RAM around 600 MB was free on first boot. The chipset performed very well on Arya Z2 and the performance is expected to be same on Arya A1 Plus as well. The chipset has been used in most budget quad cores this year and is a decent overall performer.

Camera and Internal Storage

The rear 5 MP camera on Arya A1 Plus is one of the good 5 MP units that we have come across. In our initial testing, the camera seemed at par with that used in Android One Phones. It is not perfect and we didn’t expect it to be either at this price range.

Internal storage is 8 GB and out of which around 5.9 GB is available on first boot. You can also use up to 32 GB secondary SD card storage space. There is option to check SD card as default storage disk as well.

User Interface and Battery

For now, Arya A1 Plus is running Android 4.4.2 KitKat with light customizations, but Arya assures Android Lollipop OTA upgrade sometime later. The interface is smooth and light and we didn’t notice any interface lag in our initial time with the device.

Battery capacity is 2000 mAh which sound good enough in this price segment. Since Salora hasn’t shared any usage stats it’s hard to predict or estimate practical backup you can extract from it. We will reserve our verdict till we have spent some more time with the device.

Conclusion

Salora Arya A1 Plus looks like a decent entry level smartphone. One year back this would have qualified as a 10,000 INR smartphone, but with increasing competition, this seems as good as it gets on paper. In practice as well, Salora Arya A1 Plus turned out to be a well build quad core smartphone which will be a tough competition to beat in its class. The phone is available for pre-order on Amazon.in and will start shipping in the next couple of days for 5,499 INR.
