OnePlus Banned from Selling and Importing Devices in India

After Xiaomi, now its OnePlus to take a major blow in India. Delhi High Court has banned OnePlus from importing marketing and selling devices in India. This time Micromax has directly sued the Chinese debutant over infringement of its exclusive rights over Cyanogen OS.

Micromax earlier ruined OnePlus launch party by exclusively licensing Cyanogen Inc in India. Cyanogen wasn’t upfront about the implications of this deal and after beating around the bush it finally admitted that this meant OnePlus units retailing in India won’t get any update in future.

Now Micromax has finally sought a ban on OnePlus from selling any Cyanogen based device in India, as it holds exclusive rights for Cyanogen in India. The ban comes shortly before Micromax is set to introduce its YU brand of smartphones in India.

Micromax YU phones will exclusively retail online and run CyanogenMod software. This makes YU phones a direct challenge to Xiaomi and OnePlus in India. Both brands are in legal trouble as of now.

Last week, Xiaomi was banned in India following an ex parte injunction from Delhi High Cournt, but has now been permitted to retail Qualcomm powered devices in India. OnePlus can still sell its present stock in India.

OnePlus has been working on a Plan B for some time now. It intends to sell OnePlus in India with an Android 5.0 Lollipop based custom ROM which is expected to be ready by February 2015. Until then, OnePlus has nothing but the Beta version of the Lollipop Build to replace Cyanogen with. OnePlus might also use Color OS which runs on Chinese OnePlus unit for the time being. Let’s see how OnePlus if OnePlus manages to settle the lawsuit with Micromax in India.
