Meizu MX5 Photo Gallery, Initial Overview, User Queries

Earlier this month, we announced the arrival of the Meizu MX5 to India and it was yesterday when the Chinese manufacturer Meizu launched the MX5 in an exclusive partnership with Snapdeal, pricing the device at 19,999 INR. We had a chance to get our hands on this device for some time and here are our initial observations.

Physical Overview

The Meizu MX5 retains the design elements that from its predecessor, the Miezu MX4 and it’s evident that a lot of effort went into making this product to feel like a premium phone. The all-metal body has a smooth finish and feels sturdy in your grasp while being really lightweight at the same time.

The volume and power buttons are on the right side while the dual-SIM card slot can be found on the left side. The top has a 3.5mm audio jack and the bottom has the micro-USB port along-with the Speaker grill and the microphone.

The home button is the only physical button at the lower edge of the phone and also acts as the Fingerprint reader and has a nice feel to it. Completing the setup is the 5.5″ AMOLED display that has really clear and vibrant colors thanks to the full-HD 1920 x 1080 resolution and Corning Gorilla glass to protect it.

User Interface

The Meizu MX5 runs on Flyme 4.5 which is based on Android 5.0 Lollipop and if you’re new to this UI, it may take a while to get used to the differences in the way it works.

For example, the Home button (which is where the Fingerprint sensor is) is the only physical button which when tapped once anywhere on the phone screen, acts as the Back button. Pressing it again takes you to the Home menu and a long press will put the display in Sleep mode.

Swiping the display upwards from the bottom of the screen will display the running apps in the background, along-with the Settings option which also takes a while to get used to. Tap on the app to enter it, swipe down from within the recent apps bar to kill the apps and tap and hold on an app to ‘lock’ it into memory.

These differences aside, the interface is quite intuitive and you’ll get the hang of it soon enough.

Camera Overview

The front side of the device sports a 5.0 megapixel camera which is equipped with a large ƒ/2.0 aperture and makes for excellent selfies. And if you aren’t satisfied with the quality of the picture taken, you can beautify the picture real-time with their bundled FotoNation 2.0 software.

The camera on the rear is a 20.7 megapixel marvel (with a ƒ/2.2 large aperture lens) that when coupled with the dual tone flash, takes some decent pictures thanks to the SONY IMX220 sensor that’s carried over from the previous models. Armed with a brand new 6P blue lens and laser-aided focusing technology (it can focus in just 0.2 seconds within a range of 50cm) and improvements on the software algorithms, you get good clarity pictures although we did have issues with auto-focus when used in artificial/low light.

Equally impressive is the Video-taking features on this device which lets you record in 4K and you can also record 720p slow-motion video at 100fps which would make for some very cool videos for you to show off with.

Competition

Meizu MX5 will compete with OnePlus 2, Xiaomi Mi4, ZTE Nubia Z9 Mini, and Asus Zenfone 2 ZE551ML in India. Meizu MX5 doesn’t fall short of any other smartphone in this list (based on our initial impression), except for after-sales support. The company plans on providing doorstep services as well and will be opening 20 new service centers in India over the next few weeks.

Price & Availability

The Meizu MX5 is available exclusively with Snapdeal and the 16GB variant is currently priced at 19,999 INR. While the 32 GB and 64 GB variants should be out soon, we do not have confirmation on the expected pricing options.

Snapdeal began accepting orders at 2pm IST and is wasn’t long before the Meizu MX5 sold out.
