Honor 5x Physical Overview

Honor 5x is purely made up metal and glass with a small amount of plastic used on the top and bottom of the back, Honor puts them for better network reception on its smartphones. Honor 5x comes with a 5.5 inch display on the front, and a metallic back with burshed metal finish. Sides are also protected with a metal strip with chamfered edges. The overall look and feel of the Honor 5x is quite premium and solid. Single handed usage is not easy on 5.5 inch phones; same is in the case of Honor 5x. The side bezels are very thin but the forehead and chin look a little broad.

The front top of the smartphone has the front camera, speaker grill, LED notification light and a couple of sensors. There is nothing at the bottom which looks a little weird.

User Interface

Honor has always used their very own Emotion UI in their smartphones and the Honor 5x has v3.1 of EMUI. Many of the areas are inspired from Apple iOS but the company has done well to improve the UI experience in recent times. Aesthetics and design of the new Emotion UI, which is based on Android 5.1 Lollipop, look good. It offers a lot of unique and different fingerprint gestures, off-screen gestures, themes and a lot more to stand out from the other custom UI. We tried using all these features and most of them seemed to work very smoothly during the hands on experience.

Camera Overview

Moving the focus towards the camera, we found that it comes with a few changes this time. The main camera comes with a 13 MP sensor with a 5 MP shooter in front. The rear camera also features a LED flash. The camera UI is the same which is present in the Honor 7. The camera UI is pretty fast and convenient.

Images in good lights were impressive; the focus was fast and captured good colour and details. In low-light the 13 MP snapper struggled in focusing and even the quality but still produced decent low light pictures. Front camera also works well; it is capable to click decent looking selfies.

Price & Availability

The smartphone is currently unveiled in China at a price of 1099 Yuan (INR 11,430 approx) for 2 GB RAM variant and 1499 Yuan (INR 15,600 approx). It is expected to arrive in India next month.

Conclusion

Huawei Honor 5x is a real charmer since the time we got our hands on the device. Our initial experience with the device was great; it looked very premium and solid in terms of design. It is also one of the cheapest smartphones to offer a fingerprint sensor. We are not sure about the Indian pricing but we can expect it to be under 15k range, which is a really good price for ths offering. We will reserve our final verdict about the device until we spend a little more time with it.
