Samsung Galaxy A5 2016 Hands on Overview, Good and Bad [VIDEO]

Physical Overview

Starting with the build quality of the device, all that we can say is that the device is really well built, with a great feeling in the hand. On the front of the phone, you’ll find the 5.2-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display and just below the display, you’ll find the traditional Samsung home button, with a fingerprint scanner embedded in the home button. Above the display, you’ll find the usual sensors along with the earpiece and a 5-megapixel camera for those selfies.

On the back of the phone, you’ll find the 13-megapixel primary camera with the LED flash that accompanies it. The back is pretty clean other than the camera.

Coming on to the edges of the phone, on the top of the phone, you’ll find an SIM card tray, that supports a nano SIM card and just along that you’ll find the secondary microphone for noise cancellation.

On the right side of the device, you’ll find the power button along with another SIM card tray. This second SIM card tray allows you to enter one more SIM card into your phone, along with a microSD card.

On the left side of the phone, you’ll find the volume rockers only. The volume rockers and the power button are made out of metal and have a good click to them.

On the bottom of the phone, you’ll find the I/O for the device, which comprises of the 3.5mm headphone jack and a microUSB port for charging and data sync to the device.

User Interface

The user interface on the device is the typical Samsung TouchWIZ that you find on all of Samsung phones. The A5 2016 edition runs the latest version of TouchWIZ, which runs on top of Android Lollipop 5.1.1.

Diving into the Settings and checking the available RAM on the phone revealed a mere 622 MB free out of the 2GB RAM that the phone has. This tells us that the skin running on the phone is a bit heavy, and doesn’t leave much room for other apps to function as they’d like to.

Camera Overview

The primary camera on the device is a 13-megapixel shooter, with f/1.9 aperture and the secondary camera on the device is a 5-megapixel shooter, with a f/1.9 aperture as well. This aperture on the camera lets it take good pictures, even in certain low light conditions. When we tested out the camera on the show floor, the pictures that we took with it were good in detail, and color contrast.

Price and Availability

2016-02-03 (3)

The Samsung Galaxy A5 2016 is priced at INR 29,400 and will be available in India starting 15th February. The phone will be sold online on Snapdeal only, but will also be available offline on all Samsung Stores.

Comparison & Competition

The Samsung Galaxy A5 2016 is a promising device, with some good specifications under the hood. If I have to pit it against any other device today, I’d definitely choose Nexus 5X to compete with it. These both share a lot of similar features like the similar screen size and screen resolution, yet offer different things under the hood for a comparable price point (launch prices).

Conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy A5 2016 looks like a very promising on paper, and on the first look as well. It has an excellent camera and is snappy in performance. We will make a lot more content focussed on the Samsung Galaxy A5 2016, including the dedicated camera review, gaming review and much more. Be sure to stick around to know when we cover those.
