Samsung Galaxy S7 Quick Review, Camera Overview and Pricing

I was actually not impressed when I first saw the Samsung Galaxy S7 in pictures, as it looked just like its predecessor, but I was pretty sure there is always something that makes the S series special. After taking a look deep inside, I tried to find out if the new flagship has the features that are worth the extra money and hype.

If you take a look at the overall offering, Samsung has done a great job with this phone by covering up the drawbacks of its previous flagship. The new Galaxy S7 comes with IP68 rating, which makes it water-proof and dust-proof. The camera now has a unique autofocus technology with smaller aperture and captures better low light images. The battery size is boosted from 2550 mAh to 3000 mAh with which support fast charging with both wired and wireless chargers. It also accommodates the micro SD expansion slot, which can be counted as a great upgrade.

Galaxy S7 Physical Overview

The Galaxy S7 looks a lot like its predecessor in terms of design, the size is almost the same and the shape is slightly changed. The S7 has curved back, which we have seen in Note 5 earlier, it’s just like the edges from the Galaxy S7 edge have been moved to the back. In hand, the new design feels more comfortable and handy and feels much premium if compared to the S6.

It is thoroughly made up of metal and glass, and it feels amazing from almost every aspect of design. The IP68 certification has made it void of any rubber flaps to cover up the USB ports and headphone jack. Everything on the body is water-proof, what more do we need?

Taking a look around the phone, you will find the front camera, speaker grill, proximity and ambient light sensors on the top of the face. Whereas, the bottom has the home button (with fingerprint sensor inbuilt) and capacitive navigation buttons on its left and right.

The back has a beautiful curved glass design which feels awesome to grip. The rear camera is in the center top which sticks out less than the one on Galaxy S6, jutting out a mere 0.46 mm. Dual-LED flash and heart rate sensor is jammed at the right side of the camera.

Galaxy S7 User Interface

Galaxy S7 comes with the latest version of Android Marshmallow out of the box, but as usual you will find Samsung’s TouchWiz UI on top of it. The TouchWiz UI is surely streamlined and optimized after the S6 was released but this time we did not notice any major upgrade in the interface. It has all the older features like side-by side multitasking, themes and more. With a powerful Exynos 8890 processor and 4 GB of RAM, the UI was pretty smooth and did not show any issues with the performance and handling. Although the devices we tested at the event were unused and clean.

Galaxy S7 Camera Overview

The camera on Samsung Galaxy S7 is the major upgrade after the S6. The company has used the most advanced set of smartphone cameras in this handset. The new camera comes with a 12 MP camera over the 16 MP we saw last time. But the new camera has large 1.4 micron pixels, as well as a wider aperture of f/1.7; this allows almost 56% of extra light to enter the camera. It also has the ‘Dual-Pixel’ autofocus which was earlier used only in DSLRs; it is the fastest autofocus in any smartphone till now.

When we tried clicking pictures, we were amazed to see the low light picture quality and the autofocus speed. This camera is definitely going to be a tough competition for the iPhone and there is no doubt about it. We will be doing a detailed camera review with this phone later as we receive the review unit.

Price and Availability

It is priced at INR 48,900 for the 32GB variant, and it will be available on purchase from March 18 via multiple e-retailers and offline stores. You can pre-book your Galaxy S7 before 17th March to get a free Samsung Gear VR with your smartphone. The available colour variants will be Black Sapphire, Gold Platinum and Silver Titanium.

Conclusion

Samsung has not done a lot of changes in the design department but the addition of IP68 certification and micro SD expansion is a big step to make it more users friendly. For INR 48,900 it is definitely a high-end phone but it does offer almost everything that we expect from a flagship. The display, camera and UI is top-notch, investing on this phone with number of meaningful upgrades is totally worthy as far as the initial impressions of the phone are concerned.
