Coolpad Max Unboxing

2016-05-2

Coolpad Max comes packed in a premium looking box coloured in black and gold. The face of the box is square which gives it more area to fit the contents and avoid the thickness. You can simply slide it out to open it. The smart design of the box makes it easy to unbox and the contents can be manageable. Once you open the box, first thing you will find is the handset itself, wrapped in plastic cover to protect from scratches. One thing nice about the packaging is that all the things come in small separate boxes with relating signs printed on it.

Physical Overview

Coolpad Max has a 5.5-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) 2.5D curved display with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection. It has a metal unibody structure that feels solid and premium. The front and back has no curve and lie flat but sides have a slight curve for better hold. Looking at the back, it looks a lot like the HTC A9 and has multiple antenna bands in both top and bottom. It has really thin bezels which make the display look even more impressive.

Overall, it is a great phone in terms of design and quality of built but you cannot ignore the fact that the design looks borrowed from other devices. Let us take a look around the phone and see how it looks from each angle.

Front top has the speaker grill, primary camera, and proximity and ambient light sensors in the center of the bezel.

User Interface

As far as the software is concerned, it runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop with Cool UI 8.0 on top. On the user interface department, Coolpad has provided great options in terms of different kinds of themes and wallpapers with which you can customize the interface of your device. You can download these from the theme application that is on the home screen. With this, you can also customize the icons and font size.

The UI and animations were smooth but I personally did not liked the default theme, I just felt there is too much gold and I was missing colours. Something that impressed us was the smart features that add up to the usability aspect.

Camera Overview

Coolpad Max comes with a 13 MP rear camera and 5 MP front cameras. The main camera comes with an Isocell sensor, phase detection autofocus (PDAF), dual-tone LED flash and f/2.0 aperture, while the front camera with the the OV5648 sensor and f/2.2 aperture.2016-05-19

Auto focusing speed of the rear camera is very quick, it can easily focus on the subject really quickly even in low light conditions, likewise, the camera shutter is also very fast on the phone.

We are impressed with the camera clarity of the rear camera both in artificial as well as real light conditions. The photos in artificial light had good amount of details, great clarity and good color reproduction as well.

On the other hand, the 5 MP front camera also give you very good clarity. The photos which we took in artificial light conditions were looking very nice in terms of the overall colors and details. Overall, we were very impressed with the camera performance (both rear and front), that worked very well even in low light conditions.

Gaming Performance

Out of 3 GB of RAM, 2.5 GB is free, which enables you to play games without any lag.  To test its capabilities and performance, I played Asphalt 8 which is a graphic intensive and puts a lot of load on the device hardware. We could play the game smoothly without any issues and the performance was good. So, if you expect a great gaming experience on this one, then you are at the right place.

GAMING

Touchscreen response was good, graphics were fine even in high graphics setting when we played this game for around 25 minutes.

I played Asphalt 8 for 25 minutes with 44.8 degrees Celsius as highest temperature, and battery dropped 11% .

Conclusion

Coolpad Max is surely an attractive handset, but are the looks enough for the high priced phone? The things that fall under the positive side are the build quality, performance, camera and the software features. The shortcomings include the Snapdragon 617 at this price, no Android Marshmallow and single SIM availability on the phone.

Coolpad is surely confident with their handset but in India, the consumers expect brands like Coolpad to keep the prices of its phone a bit lesser if compared to companies like Samsung, LG and Sony. I would have called it a great buy if the same handset costed something under 22K.
