Thanks to stiff competition in the entry level and budget segments, we now have a lot of very well specced smartphones for first time smartphone users as well as those looking for upgrades. In today’s comparison, we pit the Coolpad Mega 3 which was launched yesterday against the Xiaomi Redmi 3S.

The Coolpad Mega 3 comes with a 5.5 inch HD display, triple SIM card slots, a Mediatek MT6737 processor and 4G VoLTE support. The Xiaomi Redmi 3S comes with a 5 inch HD display, dual SIM card slots, Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor and 4G VoLTE support.

Let’s pit the two smartphones against each other to see how they compare.

Display

Coolpad Mega 3

The Coolpad Mega 3 features a 5.5 inch HD IPS LCD display with a resolution of 720 X 1280 pixels. The device comes with a pixel density of ~267 PPI. Given the price of the phone, this is fairly adequate.

Redmi 3S

The Redmi 3S features a smaller 5 inch HD IPS LCD display with a resolution of 720 X 1280 pixels. The device comes with a pixel density of ~294 PPI. At this price point, it is more about the display size you need instead of the pixels, so we’ll leave this up to your preference.

Hardware and Storage

The Coolpad Mega 3 is powered by a 1.25 GHz Quad core Mediatek MT6737 clubbed with Mali-T720MP2 GPU. The device comes with 2 GB RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. The internal storage on the device can be further expanded up to 64 GB via microSD card.

The Redmi 3s is powered by a 1.4 GHz Octa core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor clubbed with Adreno 505 GPU. The device comes with 2 GB RAM and 16 GB internal storage that can be further expanded up to 256 GB via microSD card.

Camera

The Coolpad Mega 3 features an 8 MP primary camera with f/2.2 aperture, autofocus and LED flash. On the front, the device features an 8 MP secondary camera with the same f/2.2 aperture as well as an LED flash.

The Redmi 3s features a 13 MP primary camera with f/2.0 aperture, phase detection autofocus and LED flash. The device comes with a 5 MP secondary camera.

Connectivity

Here is where things get interesting. The Coolpad Mega 3 comes with triple-SIM support, with each of the three slots supporting 4G LTE. It also comes with VoLTE support out of the box. That said, you can use 4G LTE only in one SIM card slot at any given point of time. Other features include Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and USB OTG.

The Redmi 3S comes with dual SIM support as well, with 4G VoLTE available out of the box. Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, FM Radio and USB OTG round off its connectivity features.

Battery

The Coolpad Mega 3 is powered by a 3,050 mAh battery.

The Xiaomi Redmi 3S is powered by a 4,100 mAh battery.

Pricing & Availability

The Coolpad Mega has been priced at Rs. 6,999 and will be sold exclusively by Amazon.in starting December 7th. The device comes in Gold, Grey and White color options.

The Redmi 3s has been priced at Rs. 6,999. The device is sold by Amazon.in, Mi.com, Flipkart as well as PayTM. It is available in Gold, Dark Gray, Silver color options.

Conclusion

The Coolpad Mega 3 is a decently specced smartphone. Triple SIM support, 4G VoLTE, 5.5 inch HD display, 2 GB RAM and a quad core processor are really good specs for a device priced at Rs. 6,999. That being said, the Xiaomi Redmi 3S is better even though it was launched a few months back. While it comes with a smaller 5 inch display and dual SIM support, it has 4G VoLTE, 2 GB RAM and a much more powerful Snapdragon 430 processor. Additionally, it has a fingerprint sensor that is missing on the Mega 3.
