Gionee A1 Plus Hands On Overview, Expected India Launch And Price

Chinese smartphone maker Gionee has just launched the A1 and A1 Plus at the MWC 2017. Both the devices fall in the midrange category and offer quality hardware at a reasonable price point. Here we will give our hands on overview and first impression of the Gionee A1 Plus. The phone sports a massive 6-inch Full HD display and gets powered by the MediaTek Helio P25 chipset.

The first thing that will come to your mind when you pick up the Gionee A1 Plus is that the handset is quite bulky. With a thickness of 9.1 mm and weighing around 226 grams, it is truly a heavyweight device. Physical Overview

Gionee’s latest phablet comes in a metallic construction. Although the phone feels a bit on the heavier side, the exterior speaks quality. However, the A1 Plus is not at all good for one hand usage.

The front of the smartphone houses the large 6-inch IPS LCD panel. The screen to body ratio lies somewhere around 71 percent which is decent enough. Just below the display, there is the home button and the capacity keys. At the top, sits the earphone piece, 20 MP selfie camera, and the sensors.

The 3.5 mm headphone jack is present at the top of the smartphone.

At the bottom, there is the stereo speakers and the USB port.

Moving on to the edges, the power, and the volume buttons is placed on the left side.

The back of the Gionee A1 Plus houses the dual camera module and the dual LED flash. There is also a hidden IR blaster within the LED flash. Just below these, lies the Gionee branding.

The 6-inch Full HD (1080 x 1920) display of the A1 Plus is a stunner. Although this is an IPS LCD panel instead of the Super AMOLED unit of the Gionee A1, the quality is incredible. The viewing angle, color reproduction, and brightness are just perfect.

Hardware and Software

Coming to the hardware, the MediaTek Helio P25 has proven to be better than the Snapdragon 625. The octa-core processor sports eight Cortex A53 CPUs clocked at up to 2.5 GHz. With it being manufactured using the 16 nm process, it is quite lighter on the battery too. Memory-wise, the 4 GB RAM, and 64 GB ROM are pretty adequate.

Speaking of the software, the Gionee A1 Plus runs Android 7.0 Nougat with Amigo OS 4.0 on top. The smartphone is quite snappy to use, and multitasking is good too.

Camera Overview

This is one of the best parts of the Gionee A1 Plus. The phone sports a dual lens rear camera. With a 13 MP sensor combined with a 5 MP one, the primary camera can take some beautiful images. For selfie lovers, Gionee has packed a 20 MP front shooter in the brand new smartphone. Even though it is a fixed focus camera, it can snap some amazing selfies. Coming to video recording, the phone supports only up to Full HD 1080p resolution.

Price and Availability

The A1 Plus rocks a price of EUR 499 (Rs. 35,000 approx.). This is quite expensive for a smartphone of its caliber. Talking about availability, the handset will first go for sale in India and Nepal, starting from March 2017.

The Gionee A1 Plus is undoubtedly a great smartphone. However, with a price tag exceeding Rs. 30,000, it does not have a decent price to performance ratio. When flagship phones like OnePlus 3T and Nubia Z11 are available at a lesser cost, why should one go for a midrange device?

However, you should note that the Gionee mainly targets the offline customers. And the offline market does not have phones like the OnePlus 3. So, there is a lot of chance that the Gionee A1 Plus may turn out to be a success.
