Samsung Galaxy Note Fan Edition Teardown: Safer Device, No Big Changes

Popular Teardown website, iFixit has just published the Galaxy Note Fan Edition Teardown. The website physically dismantled the device and compared it with the older Galaxy Note 7. Differences were spotted in both devices but no significant changes were seen. Here is all you need to know about the Galaxy Note Fan Edition Teardown.

Battery Assembly

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 featured a 3,500 mAh non-removable battery, but the Fan Edition features a smaller 3,200 mAh battery. The assembly of battery has not changed. It still lacks Adhesive tabs that are usually seen in non-removable batteries. Although we see some significant differences in the next points to come.

Battery Performance and Capacity

As mentioned before, the Note Fan Edition features a smaller 3,200 mAh battery as compared to the Note 7’s 3,500 mAh battery. The battery on the Note 7 was clocked at 13.48 Wh (Watt-hour) whereas the Note Fan Edition has a lesser (theoretically safer) clocking of 12.32 Wh.

Note 7 Fan Edition

The battery is also physically lighter. Compared to the Note 7’s 47.7 grams battery, the new one is 2.3 grams lighter at 45.4 grams. What we can see here is a safer battery, which can hopefully tolerate the heating and swelling issues that led to the fateful end of Note 7.

Other Changes

The device features no other changes apart from a smaller and lighter battery. The Note 7’s main issue was the battery, which led to a global recall of the device. The newer battery is clocked at safer performance limits. The Galaxy Note Fan edition could have added a less messy non-removable battery but as long as it is safe, it is good.

Samsung Note Fan Edition Specifications

The Note Fan Edition is just a refurbished version of the Note 7. It sports the same 5.7 inch Dual Edge Super AMOLED display with ~518 ppi. The device packs 12MP Dual Pixel camera with f/1.7 aperture and OIS and a 5MP front camera. It comes with either a Snapdragon 820 Quad-Core or Samsung Exynos 8890 SoC. The Note Fan Edition features 4GB RAM, 64GB ROM and up to 256GB expandable memory.

The only difference in the Galaxy Note Fan Edition and the Galaxy Note 7 is the battery. The Note Fan Edition packs a 3,200 mAh non-removable battery. In terms of connectivity, it comes with a USB type C port. The device features the same IP68 water resistance as the Note 7.

Pricing and Availability

The Galaxy Note Fan Edition is currently on sale in South Korea only. It is available for KRW 6,99,600 which translates to approx. Rs. 39,739.
