Amazon launches Alexa app in India for Android and iOS

Amazon has rolled out its Alexa app in India for both Android and iOS platforms. The Alexa app has been launched just after the launch of Amazon’s Echo speaker line-up in India.  Those who buy Echo speakers will need the Alexa app to set up the smart speakers that will be shipping out later this week.

Amazon had already announced the launch of its cloud-based voice assistant “Alexa” in India earlier this month. Along with it, the company also launched three Alexa-enabled voice-controlled speakers Echo, Echo Plus, and Echo Dot in India. Now, the Alexa app is available in India ahead of the availability of Echo speakers.

Amazon has also already partnered with some Indian companies and brands to cater India-specific skills with Echo speakers. Some of the companies include NDTV, Ola, Saavn, Sportskeeda, and Times of India among others.

Amazon Alexa App features

Apart from setting up the Echo speakers, the Alexa app is quite useful with a lot of features. You can use it for adding new skills, changing settings quickly, new things to try, seeing what’s playing, and creating routines, setting alarms etc. The app is also offering lists for going through your to-do list when you’re out shopping. So, users can create lists now just by talking to the voice assistant.

When it comes to music, the app will include options like Amazon Music, Saavn, and TuneIn. Users can play the music from the library and online as well, just give a command to Alexa. You can control the music as well with commands like “turn up the volume.”

Moreover, if you wish to access local skills, including local weather or traffic updates, the Echo device will be setting it up for you. You can then choose the language from English (India) out of the four language options, though you’ll need to bear with the accent. Also, make sure to switch your residence address to India.

The Alexa app also has an option to set up devices including Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Plus and Tap. So, apart from Echo line-up, is also supports the Amazon Tap, which isn’t available in India yet. This is good news for portable Bluetooth speaker owners.

Download the Amazon Alexa app for Android from the Play Store and for iOS from the App Store.
