OnePlus 5T

OnePlus has unveiled their latest flagship, the OnePlus 5T with great pomp and show in all major market simultaneously. While the phone is a revamped version of the OnePlus 5, it is coming at the exact same price as its predecessor.

Since this sounds like a sweet deal at this price, we bring to you the key reasons to buy and not to buy the OnePlus 5T. With a modern display, improved camera setup, and a special facial recognition feature, we evaluate whether OnePlus 5T has that ‘OnePlus’ factor or not.

Reasons to buy the OnePlus 5T

Out of all the good things about the OnePlus 5T, here are the best reasons why you should go for the new flagship killer from OnePlus.

Design: More in the same footprint

Accurately put, the OnePlus 5T comes with the same Anodized Aluminum chassis as its predecessor. With this premium design, now you get more screen and fewer bezels. The rear-mounted fingerprint sensor is also placed well and is easily accessible.

Design and form-factor are a good reason here as the phone is almost the same size as that of the OnePlus 5.

Display: OnePlus joins the 18:9 squad

Improved camera

Although not a major update, the rear camera on the OnePlus 5T now comes with f/1.7 aperture. While the lenses remain the same in the 16MP + 20MP configuration, the phone is now optimized for low light and portrait photography. Since every update counts, we can take this as a polished camera over its predecessor.

Facial Recognition

While OnePlus did not talk about it as enthusiastically as Apple did about the Face ID, but the OnePlus 5T comes with facial recognition. Apart from this, the phone also features a fingerprint sensor as an alternate.

Competitive Pricing

OnePlus 5T feat

The price of the OnePlus 5T is the same as that of the OnePlus 5. This is one of the biggest reasons you should go for the OnePlus 5T. The device which comes with upgrades compared to the OnePlus 5, is being offered at the same price as its predecessor.

At a starting price of Rs. 32,999, this is one of the best value-for-money phones out there. You can check the availability of the OnePlus 5T here.

Reasons to not buy the OnePlus 5T

While the display is one major reason to buy the phone, there is also a downside to it. OnePlus 5 comes with a Full HD+ resolution display, which does not compete with the Quad HD+ resolutions offered by other companies. However, at this price point, the display is a good offering, but OnePlus could have added a Quad HD panel to enhance the viewing experience.

No OIS to cameras

The only downside with the cameras on the OnePlus 5 was the lack of the optical image stabilization (OIS). The OnePlus 5T also relies on a brushed-up EIS but does not come with OIS. While we are yet to test the EIS on the OnePlus 5T, we can safely say that OIS is a far better way to get stable videos.

No water resistance, yet again

With the OnePlus 5, we noticed that water and dust resistance was missing. We expected the OnePlus 5T to come with at least an IP67 water resistance but seems like the company has not paid attention to that yet. So the phone still remains prone to water and dust damage with no water resistance certification to save it.

No Oreo out-of-the-box

Throughout the launch, OnePlus paid attention to their software enhancement part. They’re focussing on the OS but that will not be exclusive to the OnePlus 5T. The OxygenOS updates will come with Android 8.0 Oreo soon, but we think the phone should be on Android 8.0 out-of-the-box.

Since it comes with Android 7.1.1 Nougat with OxygenOS on top, the software experience remains the same as its predecessor. Also, the software enhancements for the OnePlus 5T will also be there for the OnePlus 5 at the same time.
