OnePlus 5T initial impressions: Does it have the ‘T’ factor?

With their new flagship, the OnePlus 5T, the company has stepped up the game to 18:9 aspect ratio and minimal bezels. However, the aspect ratio is not the only update with this phone. The OnePlus 5T comes with improved optics, facial recognition and much more.

The OnePlus 5T shares the same solid Anodized Aluminium chassis as its predecessor. The phone is also priced at Rs. 32,999 for the 6GB/64GB variant. It is the exact same price as the OnePlus 5 at the time of its launch. We got our hands on the OnePlus 5T and here are our initial impression of the latest flagship from OnePlus.

Physical Overview

OP 5T display

The OnePlus 5T features a bigger and more vibrant display in the same footprint as the OnePlus 5. This time OnePlus has removed the physical buttons to get 80.5% screen-to-body ratio.

Oneplus 5T camera

The phone bears an Anodized Aluminium body that is sturdy and non-slippery. The cameras are placed horizontally at the top-left corner and a fingerprint sensor now sits around the center.

Coming to the sides, the OnePlus 5T features the volume rockers and profile buttons on the left side and the lock button on the right side. All the buttons are metallic and feel premium.

Oneplus 5T 3.5mm

The bottom of the phone houses the USB 2.0 Type-C port, the Speaker grille, and a 3.5mm earphone jack. OnePlus has embraced the 3.5mm jack and pointed out that their products will continue to support it till there are ample Type-C options available.

Display

The OnePlus 5T comes with a Full HD+ (1080 x 2160p) Optic AMOLED display with 18:9 aspect ratio. It has a 2.5D curved glass with Gorilla Glass 5 for protection. The display is tall and the phone has the same footprint as the OnePlus 5.

During our hands-on, we did not notice any jelly scrolling effect as seen on its predecessor. The display is snappy and responsive and the vibrations are also refined. However, we think a Quad HD panel would’ve suited better on this phone, but the Full HD+ panel also does a good job.

Cameras

While we are yet to thoroughly test the cameras, we have a good initial impression about the OnePlus 5T in terms of optics. The company has refined the dual camera setup. The 20MP + 16MP dual rear cameras now come with f/1.7 aperture and a portrait and low-light photography approach. There is also a 16MP front-facing camera which doubles up for facial recognition.

The cameras are the same setup so they are as good as the ones on the OnePlus 5. It is rather a brushed-up version so we expect better results from the cameras. The camera UI is also the OnePlus standard UI which is easy to use and fun to play around with.

Hardware and Performance

No compromises in the OnePlus 5T when it comes to hardware. The phone runs on a Snapdragon 835 octa-core processor, clocked at 2.45GHz and coupled with an Adreno 540 GPU. The processor is paired with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage or 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. There is no expansion option which is a slight letdown, but the 128GB storage is ample for most of us.

In terms of performance, the OxygenOS backed OnePlus 5T runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat. The phone will get Android Oreo beta by late December and the stable version by early 2018. During the initial usage, the phone was smooth and responsive. There is absolutely no lag during the initial usage or playing around with the phone.

Pricing and Availability

The OnePlus 5T is priced at Rs. 32,999 for the 6GB/64GB variant and Rs. 37,999 for the 8GB/128GB model. It will be available as an Amazon exclusive and you can get notified when the phone is available for sale and an early access sale will be there for Prime members on November 21, 4:30 PM onwards.
