Xiaomi Redmi 5, Redmi 5 Plus launching on 7 December with 18:9 displays

Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus are all set to be launched on December 7th, according to an announcement from Xiaomi today. The next generation in the affordable Redmi series will come with 18:9 displays, in line with the recent trend of minimal bezel smartphones.

Although the Xiaomi announcement does not delve into too many details about the upcoming Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus, it does reveal that both the phones will feature 18:9 displays, selfie LED flash and big batteries. The announcement does not reveal the exact display size or the battery capacities, but there have been some rumours around these phones which should give us some idea about what to expect on December 7.

Additionally, Xiaomi is all set to launch the Desh ka Smartphone in India tomorrow, with some reports suggesting that it could be the Redmi 5A that was launched in China earlier.

A few hours before the official announcement from Xiaomi, the Redmi 5 was spotted on China Telecom’s website revealing its full specifications and images.

To start with, the Redmi 5 will come with a 5.7-inch display with a HD+ screen resolution, i.e., 1440 x 720 pixels. The phone is listed as running on MIUI 8.5.1.1 based on Android 7.1.2 Nougat.

Powering the Redmi 5 is a Snapdragon 625 ‘Lite’ processor, perhaps underclocked a little. It is coupled with 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage, with support for a microSD card too.

In terms of optics, the Redmi 5 will come with a 12MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera. The renders leaked on China Telecom’s website reveal that it will come with an LED flash on the rear and a the front as well.

Other features of the Redmi 5 include a fingerprint sensor, dual SIM, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Infrared and GPS. The phone will be powered by a 3,300mAh battery.

The Redmi 5 Plus will also be launched alongside the Redmi 5, but there are no confirmed details yet about the phone’s specifications. However, rumours point to a 6-inch Full HD+ 2160 x 1080 pixels display and a Snapdragon 625 processor with 3GB or 4GB RAM.

The Redmi 5 Plus will also come with a dual camera setup, according to some reports. It will feature a 12MP + 5MP rear camera setup along with a fingerprint sensor below the cameras.

While we wait for more details about the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus, get ready as Xiaomi is also launching a new smartphone in India tomorrow, dubbed as Desh ka Smartphone.
