Xiaomi Redmi 5, Redmi 5 Plus design revealed: 18:9 display, front flash

Xiaomi is gearing up to launch the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus smartphones in China on December 7. Now, the company has shown off the devices in a set of photos on Twitter. The company has not revealed any details about specifications or pricing  of the device. Both the phones can be seen having slim bezels and an 18:9 displays in line with earlier leaks.

To recall, Xiaomi has already announced the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus launch event to be held on December 7 in China. The previous announcement did not reveal the exact details of the phones, however, it confirmed the two affordable Redmi series phones with 18:9 displays. Now, the company has posted pictures of the devices confirming the full-screen displays.

Apart from the official announcement from Xiaomi, the Redmi 5 was also spotted earlier, revealing its full specifications. As per the listing, the Redmi 5 will come with a 5.7-inch display with an HD+ (1440 x 720 pixels) resolution. The phone will run on MIUI 9 based on Android 7.1.2 Nougat.

Coming to the hardware, the Redmi 5 is powered by a Snapdragon 625 ‘Lite’ processor, which could be clocked at less speed. It is further coupled with 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage, with support for a microSD card too.


In terms of camera, the Redmi 5 will sport a 12MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera with an LED flash on both the cameras. Connectivity options on the Redmi 5 include dual SIM, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Infrared, and GPS. The phone will house a 3,300mAh battery.

If we talk about the Redmi 5 Plus, there are no confirmed details about the phone’s specifications. However, some rumors suggest a 6-inch Full HD+ 2160 x 1080 pixels display and a Snapdragon 625 processor with 3GB or 4GB RAM.

According to some earlier reports, the Redmi 5 Plus was to come with a dual camera setup, however the official images now clear that it will also feature a single rear camera and both the rear camera and front camera will feature the flash. Both the phones come with a fingerprint sensor below the rear camera.

There is no word on the phone’s pricing and it will only be revealed on December 7. Xiaomi recently launched the Redmi 5A in India for 4,999 rupees with a 3,000mAh battery and Snapdragon 425 processor. So, if Xiaomi carries on its successful strategy of pricing aggressively, these new phones could also be in an affordable price range.
