Xiaomi had launched the Mi A1 smartphone back in September in India running stock Android 7.1 Nougat as a part of Google’s Android One program. Xiaomi has been testing the Oreo beta update for the smartphone since last month and now, the company has started rolling out a stable Android 8.0 Oreo update for all the users.

How to Upgrade to Android 8.0 Oreo on Mi A1

First of all, you need to be running Android Nougat v7.12.19 to get this latest v7.12.29 (Android Oreo) update. It is to be noted that the update is rolling out in batches for all the users and if you do not wish to wait, you can flash it by following any of the below mentioned methods.

Some Mi phones need to be unlocked before flashing the latest Android update. Users can choose any of following methods below to unlock your phone before flashing the latest Oreo update.

Unlocking Method

Download the Mi Unlock app from here. Now, open the Mi Unlock app and connect your phone to PC via a USB Type-C cable after entering Fastboot mode. After the phone is identified by the unlocking tool, you can proceed with the unlocking process.

Flashing Guide for Update

First, make sure that your device is fully charged for the flashing process. You must remember that all user data will be removed in this process, so back up your data before proceeding.

Download the Mi Flash Tool and download the latest ROM package file for your device. Turn off the device and press the Volume key and Power button at the same time to enter into Fastboot mode. Now, connect the device to your PC.

After that, decompress the downloaded ROM file and open the folder then copy its path on the computer. Now, double-click on it to install. After installation is completed, open MiFlash.exe and paste into the address bar the ROM file folder path copied in the last step.

Click on the Refresh button and MI Flash will recognize the device. Then, click the flash button and wait until the ROM has been successfully installed. Now, your device should automatically boot to the new Android version.

Android 8.0 Oreo comes with an array of features including Background limits, Picture-in-Picture mode, notification dots, adaptive icons, keyboard navigation, AAudio API and much more. The Oreo update on Mi A1 has Android security update for December 2017 and not the January update which was available with the last beta update.
