Honor 7X will get Face Unlock feature via an OTA update soon

Honor’s latest budget smartphone, Honor 7X will soon receive a new update that will bring Face Unlock feature. Honor, a sub-brand of Huawei, has announced at the ongoing CES 2018 that it will be adding the Face Unlock feature to its budget smartphone soon.

It is worth noting that the Honor 7X doesn’t have any dedicated facial recognition sensors like the Apple iPhone X does. As a result, the phone will use software algorithms and the 8MP front facing camera to recognize the user’s face.

Honor did not reveal when the update will hit the smartphone but we are assuming that the company will bundle this feature with the Android 8.0 Oreo-based EMUI update. The update is expected to roll out in the first quarter of 2018.

Face Unlock, the hottest new trend

Face Unlock became the latest trend in smartphones since the launch of the iPhone X, and subsequently OnePlus re-popularising it with the OnePlus 5T. Now, every other smartphone brand is using the front facing camera to make the face unlock feature more prominent.

That said, many implementations are not as secure as Face ID on Apple iPhone X because it uses special sensors to recognize the face. OnePlus 5T uses software algorithms and the front-facing camera to identify the face, and OnePlus 5 will also get this feature in an update soon.

Huawei launched the affordable Honor 7X recently with a limited edition red color in India. It packs a 6-inch FHD+ display with 18:9 aspect ratio and full view display panel. It features a dual camera setup at the back which includes one 16MP sensor with a 2MP sensor to get better pictures. On the front, you get an 8MP camera for selfies and video calling.

Honor 7X is powered by a HiSilicon Kirin 659 octa-core processor and up to 4GB RAM for optimum performance at an affordable price. It runs on Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box and features a 3340 mAh battery for long day usage. The starting price of the smartphone is Rs 12,999 and available through Amazon.
