MediaTek announces MT6739 entry-level SoC with dual 4G VoLTE, face unlock

Chipset maker MediaTek has introduced a new processor, the MediaTek MT6739 which will be an entry-level processor that will bring Face unlock and other premium features to budget phones.

At the event where the processor was announced, MediaTek also announced a partnership with Reliance Jio to make an Android Go based smartphone. This processor comes with Facial recognition that the company claims to be fast, secure, and foolproof. The feature looks premium and it is optimized to work with Android Oreo Go so that low-end phones get Facial recognition.

MediaTek MT6739 Features

Since Apple introduced the FaceID on their iPhone X, the Android OEMs have flooded their phone with similar functionality. However, the facial recognition on Android devices is not as foolproof or secure as that of Apple. Now, MediaTek has come forward with an entry-level processor that has dedicated safety for facial data.

The MediaTek MT6739 stores your facial data on the chip only, hence keeping it secure locally. Other specifications supported by the processor include 18:9 aspect ratio display with HD+ resolution. The MT6739 also supports dual SIM 4G VoLTE and can handle cameras of 13MP and 2MP with bokeh effect. For an Android Go smartphone, these are good features.

This processor will also power an Android Go smartphone from Reliance that will come under the Lyf branding. Seeing the features supported by the SoC, we can expect the Reliance smartphone to come with Facial recognition as well.
