Android Wear rebranded as Wear OS by Google, select smartwatches getting updates

Google is now rebranding the Android Wear to Wear OS, a name that Google hasn’t changed since the launch of the Android Wear OS in 2004. There is nothing new in the OS as Google has only changed the logo and the name to Wear OS by Google.

Google is calling Wear OS “a wearable operating system for everyone” in its blog post, in addition to releasing a list of smartwatches which are going to get this new Wear OS update.

Wear OS by Google

When Google first announced Android Wear OS, the smartwatches would connect only with Android smartphones, not iPhones. However, after a few updates, Google added iOS support to Android Wear OS powered smartwatches. So, to keep the name a little neutral, Google changed the name to “Wear OS” instead of “Android Wear OS”.

Dennis Troper, Director of Product Management, Wear OS said about this update,

“We’re announcing a new name that better reflects our technology, vision, and most important of all – the people who wear our watches. We’re now Wear OS by Google, a wearables operating system for everyone.” He further added, “You’ll begin to see the new name on your watch and phone app over the next few weeks.”

The rebranding of Android Wear OS happened before the Baselworld Expo which is coming up next week.
