Vivo V9 hands on overview: The new notch leader?

Chinese smartphone maker Vivo today launched its latest smartphone, dubbed as the Vivo V9 in India at an event in Mumbai. Like most of the Vivo phones, it is a selfie centric phone, and it sports a 24MP front camera with f/2.0 aperture and a selfie soft light.

The Vivo V9 comes with a mid rage Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and 4GB RAM. The smartphone features an aluminum body with a matte finish all over the back and the sides. The device has been launched in two colors – Black and Gold. The Vivo V9 is priced at Rs. 22,990 in India and pre-booking for the phone is open from today, March 23, while the smartphone will go on sale in India from April 2, which the company is calling as Super Day.

The Vivo V9 comes with a basic Vivo design with the new style display on the front which has a notch on the top which includes the basic sensors and the front-facing camera. Below the display is a little chin which is thicker than rest of the bezels around the display.

The micro USB port, and the 3.5mm audio port is on the bottom side along with the speaker.

The smartphone comes with a matte finish all over the back panel and the black color variant comes with a gloss on the back. The smartphone comes with a dual camera setup at the rear in a vertical orientation and the flash is placed below the camera module. The fingerprint sensor is rectangular in shape and has been placed at the back in a comfortable position.

The Vivo V9 comes with a 6.3 inch IPS LCD display with FHD+ (1080 x 2280) resolution, and the pixel density of the display is ~400 PPI. The smartphone comes with very thin bezels on either sides of the display, the top of the display has a notch just like we saw on the iPhone X and the bottom part of the front panel has a comparatively thick chin.

The display has a 19:9 aspect ratio which allows the smartphone to play 18:9 videos perfectly without the notch getting in the way and the software is also optimized according to the notch. The display generates beautiful colors, while the viewing angles are not perfect but overall the display is excellent.

The Vivo V9 comes with a dual camera setup at the rear consisting of a 16MP shooter which acts as a primary lens and has f/2.0 aperture size. The secondary sensor in the dual camera setup is a 5MP shooter which is helpful in creating Bokeh effects in the pictures.

The smartphone comes with a 24MP front-facing selfie camera which is equipped with lots of AI enhancements and selfie flash for improved selfies. The rear camera is capable of shooting up to 4K videos at 30fps frame rate. The smartphone also features phase detection autofocus, dual LED flash, HDR and Face Detection.

The Vivo V9 runs on the latest version of Android which is Android 8.1 Oreo, and the software is topped with the OEM’s Funtouch OS 4.0. The smartphone comes with a fingerprint sensor as well as the face unlock feature which uses the 24MP front camera to recognize the user’s face and unlock the device.

The Vivo V9 comes in two colors – Gold with a matte finish at the back and a Black color variant which has a glossy finish on the back. The price of the Vivo V9 is Rs. 22,990 and both the color variants are available to pre-order from today, and the smartphone will be available to buy from 2nd April.
