Moto G6 vs Moto G5S Plus: Is it worth upgrading?

Motorola recently announced its latest mid-range device, the Moto G6 at an event in New Delhi along with the Moto G6 Play, the cheapest device in the Moto G6 series. The Moto G6 series is the successor of last year’s Moto G5 series and comes with revamped design, including an 18:9 display.

Motorola had launched the Moto G6 series consisting of three devices at an event in Brazil earlier this year. As of now, the company has not launched the top-end variant of the Moto G6 series, the Moto G6 Plus in India. In this post, we will compare the newly launched Moto G6 with the Moto G5S Plus, last year’s best device under the Moto G5 series.

Display

Moto G6 vs Moto G5S Plus

The Moto G6 features a 5.7-inch full HD+ IPS LCD display with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels and an aspect ratio of 18:9. The Moto G5S Plus on the other hand, features a traditional 5.5-inch full HD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and an aspect ratio of 16:9. Both the devices come with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection on the front.

In terms of display, the Moto G6 with the latest 18:9 display is the obvious winner.

Hardware and Storage

The Moto G6 is powered by an octa core Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor coupled with Adreno 506 GPU. It comes in two memory variants – 3GB RAM + 32GB storage and 4GB RAM + 64GB internal storage.

On the other hand, the Moto G5S Plus is powered by an octa core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor coupled with Adreno 506 GPU. It comes in two memory variants – 3GB RAM + 32GB storage and 4GB RAM + 64GB internal storage.

In terms of performance, the Moto G5S has an upper hand and it is disappointing that Motorola has used the Snapdragon 450 SoC in a mid-range device. The Snapdragon 450 SoC that Motorola has used in the Moto G6 is used by Xiaomi in its budget devices such as the Xiaomi Redmi 5 which is priced at Rs. 7,999, which is almost half of what the Moto G6 base variant is priced at.

Camera

Coming to the camera department, the two devices come with similarly placed dual rear camera setups. The Moto G6 features a 12MP primary camera with f/1.8 aperture, phase detection autofocus and a 5MP secondary camera with f/2.2 aperture. The primary camera is assisted by a dual-LED dual-tone flash. On the front, the device sports an 8MP selfie camera with f/2.2 aperture and an LED flash.

The Moto G5S features a dual 13MP camera setup with f/2.0 aperture, autofocus and dual-LED dual-tone flash. On the front, the device sports an 8MP selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture and an LED flash.

Software and Battery

Moto G6 vs Moto G5S Plus

In terms of software, both the device offer a similar experience as they both run on Android 8.1 Oreo with near stock Android experience. However, the Moto G6 has an advantage in terms of software as it has been launched with Android 8.1 Oreo and will get another software update. Additionally, it also supports Google’s Project.

Coming to the battery, both the devices come with a 3,000mAh battery with fast charge support.

Connectivity

In terms of connectivity, both the devices come with almost similar features. Connectivity options on the device include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, 3.5mm audio jack and NFC. The only upgrade that the Moto G6 has received is that it now features a USB Type – C port instead of the regular microUSB 2.0 port.

Pricing

Moto G6

The Moto G6, an Amazon exclusive has been priced at Rs. 13,999 for the 3GB RAM variant and Rs. 15,999 for the 4GB RAM variant. On the other hand, the Moto G5S Plus 4GB RAM variant is available for Rs. 12,999 on Amazon.

Conclusion

After comparing the Moto G6 with the Moto G5S Plus, it looks like the device comes with minimal changes and the major change is in terms of design. Considering other devices in this price range such as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 and the unannounced Nokia X6, the Moto G6 does not look like a good option and we suggest you either go with Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro or wait for Nokia to launch the X6 in India.
