Samsung’s foldable phone Galaxy Fold now official: Price, features, specifications

After revealing the prototype in November last year, Samsung has now officially launched its foldable phone dubbed as Galaxy Fold at yesterday’s event. The Galaxy Fold comes with a 7.3-inch Dynamic AMOLED Infinity Flex Display which folds into a compact 4.6-inch cover display.

The new Galaxy Fold is also powered by the Snapdragon 855 chipset with 12GB of RAM. It also comes with a triple rear camera set up and dual front cameras just like the S10+. Moreover, it has a cover display front camera. The Galaxy Fold packs two batteries with a total of 4,380mAh capacity.

Galaxy Fold Features

Samsung says that the Galaxy Fold sports the largest-ever display in a Samsung phone. It has been in development since last eight years after the first prototype was showcased in 2011.

The company used a polymer layer to make the display around 50% thinner than the typical smartphone. It also makes the Galaxy Fold flexible and sturdy. There is a hidden hinge that has a Samsung logo and comes with interlocking gears for seamless folding. It has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner to unlock the device easily.

The Galaxy Fold’s UX has been optimized for a better experience. The new UX comes with several features like App Continuity that will automatically show the app where you left it when you open and close the display. It also has a Multi-Active Window feature that lets you open up to 3 apps at a time on the main display for better multitasking.

Galaxy Fold Specifications

The Galaxy Fold sports a 7.3-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED main display with 4.2:3 aspect ratio. It folds into a 4.6-inch HD+ Super AMOLED cover display with 21:9 aspect ratio. It has a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.

The device is powered by the Snapdragon 855 7nm SoC with Adreno 640 GPU. It packs 12GB LPDDR4x RAM and 512GB UFS 2.1 storage. The smartphone runs Android 9.0 Pie with a new UX on top.

For imaging, there is a 12MP primary rear camera with variable f/2.4-f/1.5 aperture and OIS. There is another 12MP Telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture and a 16MP 123° Ultra Wide sensor with f/2.2 aperture with up to 10X digital zoom. It has a 10MP primary front camera with 80° wide-angle lens, f/1.9 aperture and an 8MP secondary depth sensor with f/2.2 aperture. It also has a 10MP cover camera with f/2.2 aperture.

Connectivity options will include 5G, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ax (2.4/5GHz), 4×4 MIMO, Bluetooth 5, GPS with GLONASS, USB 3.1, NFC, and MST. The device is packed with 4,380mAh battery with fast Charging support both on wired and wireless charging.

Price, availability

The Samsung Galaxy Fold price has been set at US$ 1,980 (Rs. 1,40,760 approx.) for its 5G variant. The 4G variant will also be made available. The foldable phone comes in Space Silver, Cosmos Black, Martian Green, and Astro Blue colors.

The Galaxy Fold will be available in the U.S. starting from April 26 through AT&T and T-Mobile carriers. The launch date, price and availability in other countries including India is not yet known.
