Vivo introduced the concept of pop-up selfie camera with the Vivo NEX last year. It looks like the company has been working to refine the concept since then and the result of that is the new Vivo V15 Pro. The smartphone was launched in India last week with features like a 32MP pop-up selfie camera, triple rear cameras including a 48MP sensor, a Super AMOLED display, and a new Snapdragon 675 chipset.

We have been using the Vivo V15 Pro for quite some time now and here’s what we think about Vivo‘s new pop-selfie camera phone.

Design

The design is the main attraction of this new Vivo phone. The V15 Pro is a good-looking phone from all angles. It has a plastic back with curved edges on both sides that feels good. The back panel is reflective offering a pattern that changes with the light. We have the blue variant of the V15 Pro that looks quite cool with a design that feels like a spectrum.

The V15 Pro is slim and lightweight and it fits comfortably in the hand thanks to its rounded edges. The placement of the buttons is appropriate and you wouldn’t have to flex your fingers a lot to hit the right ones. Up front, there is an Ultra FullView display with no notch and very fewer bezels offering a screen-to-body-ratio of 91.64 percent.

Pop-up Selfie Camera

The feature that makes V15 Pro’s design unique is its pop-up selfie camera. The pop-up camera is a good feature for those who don’t like a notch display. It helps in offering a more immersive experience on the display without any parts that may cover the content while playing games or watching video.

Another good thing about the pop-up selfie camera of the V15 Pro is that it also works for face-unlocking. The face unlock is really very fast and the camera pops out in about 0.46 seconds when you press the power button. If we talk about its durability, Vivo claims that it can bear a force of up to 120kg and it has been tested at least 3,00,000 times.

Display

The Vivo V15 Pro uses a big 6.39-inch Super AMOLED display, unlike the company’s most phones that use a LCD screen. As a result, the display offers vibrant colors and is sufficiently bright and vivid. It also offers good viewing angles and feels more immersive as the smartphone has very slim bezels. Vivo has added navigation gestures so the tall display is not a problem here.

The display also comes with the new in-display fingerprint scanner. It is the fifth generation fingerprint scanner since the first one on the Vivo X21 UD last year. The company claims it is much faster and more secure compared to the previous ones and takes only 0.37 seconds to unlock the device.

Overall, the Vivo V15 Pro feels premium with an attractive design and immersive display.

Cameras

While the 32MP pop-up selfie camera is the main highlight of the V15 Pro, the triple rear cameras also get a lot of attention. There is a 48MP main sensor, an 8MP wide-angle sensor, and a 5MP depth sensor in the setup. The 48MP sensor resizes images to 12MP resolution using pixel binning tech. This surely offers more exposure and good details in the images.

We take a few pictures with the V15 Pro and it can be seen that the camera takes decent pictures with well-saturated colors. Although there is a little bit of graininess in the indoor images. Take a look at a few camera samples here.

The wide-angle sensor lets you capture a wide picture but that also results in slightly poor image quality. You can see in the images below, the one clicked with the wide-angle sensor looks a bit washed out in comparison to the one with the main sensor.

In terms of selfies, the 32MP pop-up camera does a fairly good job. The outdoor selfies are sharp with balanced colors as well as good details. I am impressed with the background blur in portrait mode. It also has a dedicated AI Selfie and a Portrait Light effect as well.

The smartphone’s camera is also equipped with a dedicated night mode. It has support for 4K video recording at 30fps and slo-mo at 240fps. In our initial testing, we liked the Vivo V15 Pro’s camera.

Performance

The V15 Pro is the first smartphone that is powered by a new Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 octa-core processor. It is paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. If we talk about the performance, the V15 Pro easily manages to handle the day-to-day tasks. Also, while switching between the apps the phone is a great performer. If you’re a PUBG Mobile fan, this is the phone for you as the game runs smoothly on the high graphic settings.

In terms of software, the smartphone runs Funtouch OS 9 based on Android 9 Pie. The Funtouch OS UI may feel a bit cluttered to some with all its bloatware. As many brands these days offering stock Android interfaces, it can be a bit disappointing to some users.

The V15 Pro packs a 3,700mAh battery. In our testing, we found that it can easily offer 1.5 days of juice after moderate usage. The bundled charger charges the phone pretty quick and it takes just 1.5 hours.

Wrapping Up

The V15 Pro with its unique and attractive design and a vibrant Super AMOLED display offers a good value for money. Moreover, the 48MP main camera seems very impressive and adds value to it. It is the pop-up selfie camera that makes it stand out from the crowd and with its 32MP sensor, Vivo is really acing the selfie game yet again.
