How to Turn on Speedometer in Google Maps on Android

Google Maps has managed to be one of the best navigation apps for Android, thanks to the slew of features it has on offer. One exciting feature that the giant lately added to its application is the on-screen speedometer. In this article, let’s see how to turn on Speedometer in Google Maps on Android.

Enable Speedometer in Google Maps

As the name suggests, the Speedometer feature shows you the exact speed of your vehicle on the go, helping you keep a tab on the speed limits. And unlike the one on your car’s dash, this one changes colors while going off the limit, making it a lot easier to have a peek at while driving.

Now, you can use it for other purposes, too- say your dashboard’s console is malfunctioning for some reason or you want to calculate the speedo error and thereby the true speed of your vehicle. Whatever the reason, here’s how you can activate this feature.

Step-by-Step Guide to turn on Speedometer in Google Maps

1] Open Google Maps on your Android. Make sure that you’re running the app’s latest version; if not, update it from Google Play Store.

2] Tap the hamburger menu (three lines) given on the top-left corner and click on Settings.

3] Now, head to the Navigation Settings section.

4] Here, scroll down to locate the Speedometer option and flick the toggle to enable the feature.

Now, go back to the Maps home screen and start navigation by entering your destination and current location- make sure that GPS is enabled in the settings. As soon as you begin the navigation, you’ll be able to see a small window at the bottom left of the screen, indicating your vehicle’s current speed.

Note that there’s a marginal polling time while using GPS on the phone to measure the speed of the vehicle. Hence, don’t expect it to be super responsive to your throttle actions. That said, the indicated pace would be pretty accurate based on your phone’s efficacy, and a little slower than your vehicle’s console for obvious reasons.

In addition, Google also offers speed limit indicators and speed camera alerts based on your region. If the speed limits feature is available in your location, the Maps’ speedometer will let you know if you’re driving too fast by playing audio cues and changing color.
