How to Unlock Your iPhone While Wearing a Face Mask No Apple Watch Required

Given the current situation due to COVID-19, people working in public places are required to wear face masks. That means that those having iPhones with Face ID cannot unlock their device except for manually entering the passcode. Thankfully, we now have a fresh solution to unlock iPhone while wearing a face mask.

Unlock your iPhone using Face ID while wearing a Face Mask

In general, the mask completely covers your nose and mouth features, which should technically render the FaceID to fail. However, you can still make it work through a simple trick, which involves setting the FaceID and an alternate appearance with the mask partially covering your face.

1] On your iPhone, head to Settings > Face ID & Code.

2] Here, reset your current face and click Set up Face ID.

3] While scanning, fold the mask in half so that it partially covers your face. Make sure that it includes only the tip of your nose and no further. If Apple recognizes that your face is covered, it will ask you to provide a clear view. You need to remove the mask again to start the scanning process.

4] You should see “Face ID is now set up” once the scan is complete.

5] Now, click Set up an alternative appearance.

6] While scanning, fold the mask, and put it on the other side of your face. If you covered the right part of your face in the first step, go on for the left this time.

Once the scan is complete, wear the mask completely and check if the Face ID is working. If by chance it doesn’t, give it another try. It should also work fine without a mask.

OR

Alternatively, you can hold your mask to the tip of your nose while setting up Face ID. However, using this method, you’ll be able to unlock your phone only when your mask is resting right above nostrils and not any further. You can use this method if the first one doesn’t work.

According to reports, Apple will soon be introducing a new Face ID feature to unlock the iPhone without having to take off the face mask in iOS 13.5. It’ll automatically detect the mask to pull up the passcode entry screen as soon as the user tries to unlock the device- no waiting or manual swipe for entering the passcode.
