Honor 8 Detailed Camera Review, Photo Samples

Honor has been teasing its new flagship phone Honor 8 from quite some time now. The smartphone has now been officially launched in India today at Rs. 29,999. At this price point it competes with phones like OnePlus 3, Zenfone 3, Moto Z Play, Le Max 2 and other mid range phones. The main highlight of this device is its camera and superb build quality.

To be sure, we tested the Honor 8 to find out the results from the dual-camera setup on the back.

Honor 8 Camera Software

The camera app on Honor 8 is quite similar to what we have seen on previous Honor phones. The left edge of the screen has the camera toggle icon on top, followed by the camera filters, flash on/off and selective focus mode. On the right edge, there is a toggle for video/camera followed by the camera shutter in center and recent pictures at the bottom. You can swipe left to open camera, swipe down to open camera settings and swipe up to reach modes.

Camera Modes & Filters

Honor has always tried to include multiple numbers of modes in the camera. Like its predecessors, the Honor 8 also has tons of modes to make photography more fun. Some of these modes are Beauty, HDR, Pro photo, Panorama, Light painting, Good food, night shot, audio shot and more.

To get creative with videos, you can use Time-lapse, slow motion and pro video modes. Other than this, there are color filters for still photos.

Front Camera Samples

On the front, Honor 8 comes with an 8MP camera with f/2.4 aperture. Selfie quality is good under well lit conditions; it also has a beauty mode to make your skin look perfect. Low light selfies are not as good as I expected it to be but still decent.

Rear Camera Samples

Artificial Light

Camera performance in well lit artificial light is phenomenal. In case you are not able to get good shots in auto mode, you can always opt for manual settings to adjust the camera settings.

Natural Light

When it comes to natural light photography from this phone, you are in for a treat. The dual camera setup does a great job in capturing wide range of color and striking details. Autofocus works perfect and you can click amazing pictures using the wide aperture mode. It is one of the best rear cameras present on any phone under 30k mark.

Low Light

Low light performance using the auto mode is not a god idea. It comes with a night mode which is suitable for low light pictures, but only if you carry a tripod with yourself. The pictures were bright but the details were not as sharp as expected. You must know that the lack of OIS makes the pictures look hazy in low light, in case you are using the night mode.

Camera Verdict

Honor 8 certainly has the same camera that we saw on the Huawei P9, only the Leica branding is not used. The performance is really impressive, and there is no doubt about it. It can click amazing pictures in day light and in artificial light, but the low light performance is not as good as I expected it to be. If compared to other phones in the same price range, this phone certainly has the best camera for day light pictures.
