Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 Vs Snapdragon 450: Is there any difference?

We have seen many entry-level and even mid-range phones powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 chipset since the last couple of years. Similarly, another popular budget range chipset is Snapdragon 450. Both the SD 625 and SD 450 have the same octa-core 64-bit ARM Cortex A53 CPUs and manufactured on the same process.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 (SD625) is a mid-range octa-core SoC which has been used in a number of smartphones while Qualcomm has lately announced the new Snapdragon 450 Mobile Processor in its 400 series. SD 450 is the first one to use 14nm FinFET process in 400 series.

Since both the octa-core processors based on the similar manufacturing process, but there are some differences between them. Such as Snapdragon 625 could go up to 2.0GHz when it comes to clock speed while Snapdragon 450 could go up to 1.8GHz.

Apart from clock speed, there are minor differences in terms of camera and video support. Let’s find out how these two mid-range octa-core processors are different from each other!

What’s the difference?

Faster Clock Speed

Snapdragon 625 has 11.11% faster CPU clock speed than the Snapdragon 450. All eight cores of SD 625 are clocked at 2.0 GHz. Whereas in Snapdragon 450 all of the eight cores run at up to 1.8 GHz only. Though it is very unlikely that you can notice the clock speed difference in day to day usage. Still, due to the clock speed, the Snapdragon 625 might offer slightly better battery life.

Camera

When it comes to camera support, Snapdragon 625 can support up to 13 MP dual cameras, and up to 24 MP single camera. It has 2x Image Sensor Processor (ISP), enhanced autofocus and also supports 2x optical zoom as well.

Whereas Snapdragon 450 can support a single camera up to 21MP@30fps, and 24MP@24fps, and dual cameras up to 13 MP. It also features 2x Image Sensor Processor (ISP). It has a real-time Bokeh effect feature during camera preview as well.

Video

We can capture video Up to 4K UltraHD @ 30 fps, Up to 4K Ultra HD video playback, H.264 (AVC) & H.265 (HEVC) with Snapdragon 625. While with Snapdragon 450 we can record up to 1080p video @60 FPS, and it supports up to 1080p video playback @60 fps & H.264 (AVC), H.265 (HEVC).

Snapdragon 625 can shoot and play 4K videos while Snapdragon 450 comes with up to 1080p video support only.

Both the chipsets sport the integrated X9 LTE modem that supports Cat. 7 with maximum transfer rates of 300 Mbps (downstream) and 150 Mbps (upstream).

The Snapdragon 625 supports up to FHD+ 1920×1080 display up to 60fps. While SD 450 also has support for 1080p FHD as well as FHD+ displays. Interestingly, both the processors have also support for the new 18:9 displays as well as Qualcomm TruPalette camera features and improveTouch technology support.

Connectivity and others

They have the same connectivity options including the  Integrated 802.11ac Multi-User
MIMO (MU-MIMO), USB 3.0, BT 4.1 etc. Lastly, they also have the same fast charging support i.e. Quick Charge 3.0 tech. For audio, they both support Crystal clear VoLTE with Ultra HD Voice, High fidelity music playback 24bit/192kHz, and Dolby 5.1 support.

So, overall there is not much difference between these two budget chipsets in terms of performance.
