Sony has released two new flagship smartphones on the first day of #MWC2018 – the Sony Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact. The smartphones come with lots of new tech from Sony, like the new Motion Eye camera and the 18:9 HDR display. There are a few differences between both the variants of the Xperia XZ2, but most of the specs remain the same – both the smartphones are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset.

Sony Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact Physical Overview

The Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact come with a basic Sony Xperia smartphone design, only this time the bezels are slightly thin. The front has the 18:9 aspect ratio display on both smartphones and the bezels on the top and bottom of the screen are slightly thinner.


The back panel of the Sony Xperia XZ2 is made from glass and protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. The fingerprint sensor is placed on the back of the glossy panel. The rear on the back of the Xperia XZ2 compact is all metal build and comes with a brushed finish.

Although both the XZ2 and the XZ2 Compact come with the same Full HD+ resolution, the screen size of both the phones is different – the XZ2 comes with 5.7-inch display while the XZ2 Compact comes with a 5-inch display.

HDR Display

The display on both the Xperia XZ2 variant comes with the Full HD+ resolution and 18:9 aspect ratio display. This display support 4K HDR video content with the best quality you’ve seen on any smartphone display.

4K HDR recording support

Sony has used a 19MP Motion Eye sensor at the back of the smartphones; the front facing camera is a 5MP shooter for selfies. The rear camera can shoot videos up to 4K HDR in addition to 960 fps slow motion videos at 1080p quality.

Answer: HDR capable displays promise to deliver a much better viewing experience, in terms of the contrast as well as colour reproduction. Of late, HDR capable displays in smartphones have become one of the USPs for companies, allowing them to differentiate from their competitors.

In real life, too, HDR displays make a great deal of difference. This will be immediately visible when viewing videos with dark settings, for example.

Conclusion

The Sony Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact come with lots of new improvements from the last flagship, but all of the refinements are not what we are expecting from a 2018 flagship smartphone. The camera is excellent, but the display has thick bezels which don’t look too good for a flagship. Additionally, both the phones also come with Full HD+ displays, something that may turn off some customers, especially considering that these are flagship phones.
