With the upcoming launch of Lenovo’s Vibe S1 we decided to put the S1’s camera through its paces and see what the camera on this mid-ranger is capable of and whether it is worth your money.

Camera Hardware

Let’s start with the on-paper hardware- the Vibe S1 has a 13 MP primary camera that can shoot 4128 x 3096 pixel pictures. The camera is also equipped with phase detection autofocus and a dual-tone LED flash. The marquee feature in the camera story is the front facing camera(s). The Vibe S1 house two front facing cameras(and 8 MP and another 2 MP) that help capture details of the subject better than a single shooter since the secondary(2 MP) camera allows the phone to focus precisely on the subject. While the 8 MP sensor focuses on the subject, the second camera, capable of variable focus,  captures objects around the subject to accurately judge the depth of field resulting in a sharper picture.

Camera Software

The camera software is fairly straightforward on the Vibe S1. Menus are neatly tucked away in easily accessible and understandable icons. The UI carries a neutral hue to the elements. A nifty addition in the selfie mode is that the phone allows you to switch between a standard selfie mode and a mode that allows you to add effects to your selfie. These effects include blurring the background in an image(to give the illusion of a clearer view of the subject) or simply create a cut-out of the subject and superimpose it on another image.

Camera Performance

The Vibe S1’s camera performed well in the sample images we shot and can easily pass off as a well-rounded performer for its class. Colour reproduction was accurate on both cameras and the camera never struggled to attain a sharp focus. The front facing camera performed exceptionally well by capturing copious amounts of light and capturing the subject’s features appropriately. The added blur and cut-out features work on-point but its use after the initial hustle settles is questionable.

Conclusion

We think the Lenovo Vibe S1 is a great performer for its price-range and you can undoubtedly not go wrong with the cameras on this phone. If cameras mean a great deal to you on a smartphone, the Vibe S1 is sure not to disappoint you.
