Following Microsoft’s launch of its premium smartphones, the Lumia 950 and the Lumia 950 XL, we are interested in knowing how well the cameras on these phones truly perform and whether these cameras are worth your well-earned money. Since the cameras on both the standard and the XL variant are identical, we shall collectively review the phones under the ‘Lumias 950’ pseudonym. Lets dive right in.

Microsoft Lumia 950 and 950 XL Camera Hardware
As we stated before, both the new Lumias are composed of the same camera hardware. Under the Carl Zeiss lens lies a 20 MP optically stabilized camera solution that is supported by a triple-LED flash. The sensor has an aperture of f/1.9 and sizes in at ½.4 inches. Each pixel is 1.12 µm in size and the camera also sports the company’s PureView technology. The front camera is a 5MP sensor capable of capturing video in 1080p while the rear camera records video in 4K.
Microsoft Lumia 950 and 950 XL Camera UI
The camera UI on these phones is the same you would expect from a Lumia device. You tap to take a shot and swipe to view your recent images. All other settings such as exposure etc. are neatly tucked away under accessible and understandable shortcuts and iconography. We like that Microsoft didn’t try to reinvent the wheel here and decided to stick to its roots and, instead, refine an already solid formula.

Microsoft Lumia 950 and 950 XL Camera Performance
The Lumias performed admirably well in our test, as we’d expect from a device in this price range. The clarity was in point, a good amount of detail was captured in every shot and it even held its own in artificial-low light. The front facing camera echoed the same results with self portraits that had a good amount of clarity and the exposure set accurately. Color tones were not changed and overall accuracy was maintained too. Overall, we are very pleased with the performance of both the front and the rear cameras on the Lumias 950.
The Lumias 950 performed excellently in our camera review, which is as it should be considering that these are high-end devices. We definitely give these cameras a solid thumbs-up.
